Carey High School Class of 1943 Baccalaureate and Commencement

Baccalaureate services for Carey High School graduates of 1943 will be Sunday at 8 PM at First Methodist Church with Rev. B L Lee preaching. Commencement at the school auditorium on Thursday May 27 with valedictorian Virginia Kurtz and salutatorian Essie Cole, followed by diplomas presented by Dr L I Treece. Carey native earns aviation metalsmith third class rating

Carl D. Hunter of Carey Ohio was promoted to aviation metalsmith third class after graduating from the Naval air technical training center at Navy Pier. He was part of a 145 strong class of Bluejackets learning aviation machinist mates and metalsmith duties and earned the post by high aptitude test scores.

American Legion Auxiliary to Meet

The American Legion Auxiliary of Forl Green Post No. 344 will hold its monthly meeting Monday evening at the Legion hall. The group will march in a body to the high school to attend the Victory Corps graduation exercises sponsored by the organization. After the program a short business and social meeting will follow at the Legion hall, with poppy sale planning for Saturday May 29. Victory Corps Graduation Night at Carey High School

Victory Corps will graduate Carey High School seniors with diplomas presented by Harry A. Eaton of Ashland, 5th district commander of the Ohio American Legion. Martin V. Coffey of Middletown, state commander, will speak on the Victory Corps and war matters from Roane Waring. Carey Boy Awarded Order of Purple Heart

Pfe. Ray Stroub Jr son of Mr and Mrs Ray Stroub of Carey High street received the Order of the Purple Heart from the War Department. He was wounded in the back and legs by machine gun bullets December 2 1942 in New Guinea and is recovering in an Australian hospital. This is the first award to a Carey soldier in the current war.

Local youths begin naval training at Great Lakes

Victor N Dunn and Richard Jacob, sons of local residents, start basic training at the U S Naval Training Station Great Lakes Illinois. They will study seamanship Naval customs and procedures and undergo aptitude tests and interviews to determine the best naval assignments. After graduation they receive nine day leaves and then proceed to trade school or sea duty based on test scores.

A wartime conference of the state council Knights of Columbus met in Columbus on Saturday and Sunday. Delegates from Carey Council attended. Navy Furlough and Rank Advances for Local Veterans

Eugene Lab of West North Street has been advanced to seaman first class in the Navy. His brother Cecil Lab also serves in the Navy and will return home for a nine day furlough. Cecil travels with Charles Iden from East South Street after training at Great Lakes Naval Station.

Wind Storm Rips Through Wyandot and Seneca Counties

A fierce morning wind storm, described as two baby tornadoes, cut a wide swath through Carey McCutchenville Bloomville and Attica in Wyandot and Seneca counties causing extensive property damage. It toppled trees damaged homes and utility lines, uprooted a hedge of structures, and blew roofs from several buildings including farms along West Street and S Vance. No casualties recorded in the readable text.

Thomas Medford Schira Graduates as Champion Typist

The 44 graduates of Tiffin University include Thomas Medford Schira who posted 81 words per minute to win the school wide typist championship. Geneva Hawkish recorded 72, and novice champ June Ehrhart had 40. Martha Ann Tracey won amateur class with 49 wpm. Awards were presented by Karl Leiner.

Vaughn Family Visitors From Carey And Ypsilanti

J A Vaughn of east of Carey visited Friday with sons Cpl James Vaughn who just finished mechanics school at Ypsilanti and Pvt Joseph Vaughn who remains ill with phlebitis at Willow Run hospital. Joseph had earlier taken a meteorologist course at the University of Michigan and was quarantined with scarlet fever. He was discharged, then fell ill again and is slowly improving.
