The Carey Jaycees completed a major community project by installing and anchoring ten waste receptacles on village sidewalks on May 6 1967. Dwight Orians and Larry Dible designed and manufactured the units after cost checks and member input.
The Our Lady of Consolation Shrine launches the Pilgrim cafeteria with about one thousand diners on opening day despite poor weather. Daily service runs 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. except Monday, with three entrees offered. Manager Eugene Leatherman, backed by wife Amelia, brings extensive catering experience from Gladieux Corporation.
The Rosary-Altar Society meets Tuesday May 16 at 8 p.m. in the School Auditorium. Parish Chairman Mrs. Harold Emerine leads the Youth & Family Life program with speaker Mrs. William Kunisch of Berkey, Ohio on "Cheaper by the Dozen." All parish ladies invited. refreshments by Committee 4 led by Mrs. Robert Greene.

Dwight Orians was elected president of the Carey Jaycees for 1967 68 at the May 7 membership meeting. He succeeds Richard D. Hunter with Bob F. Hunter as vice president Leonard Bakies secretary Cletus Orians treasurer Del Mc Ginnis director. The board also includes John Rymer and Richard D Hunter as two year directors.
Sp/4 Frederick Mathern and his brother Sp/4 Dell Mathern Jr. of South Vance Street are serving in the United States Army. Frederick joined Sept 2 1969, trained at Fort Knox and Aberdeen Proving Ground, spent 13 months in Korea, and returned to Fort Knox after 27 days leave. Dell Jr. joined May 24 1966, trained at Fort Dix, stationed at Fort Campbell, and has been in Vietnam since May 2.
The Weslyan Guild of the Methodist Church met May 3 at 8:00 pm at Mrs. Clayton Twining's home with 16 members present. Mrs. Ralphgel presided. devotionals from Acts 1:1-8 were led by Mrs. Crayton Twining. Mrs. Karl Krout reported on Amish religion and customs. hostesses served dessert. A June 7 picnic meeting will be at Mrs. Ralph Vogel's home.
At the May 8 meeting the Carey Board of Education approved hiring Carl Hart of Upper Sandusky as an elementary teacher. They reviewed all current and renewal contracts and discussed staffing in industrial arts, elementary, and the commercial department. A report on the intensified business program prompted authorization to purchase business machines and furniture for a new course. Principal Cloyce Wentling outlined remodeling costs for the bus garage, with further investigation planned before a decision.
Joseph Jacoby delivered a 51 minute Bowling Green University piano recital highlighting his mature technique and modest demeanor. Family and friends from Carey Delphos Fayette Arlington Fremont and Fostoria attended along with relatives from nearby communities.
On Mother's Day May 14 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation an 8 am Mass will open a breakfast for about 400 guests in the School Hall. Father Hubert Kobinski will speak on Mother’s Day Reflections. Sister Joan and students from 4th to 8th grade will provide music. Knights of Columbus join to prepare and serve. Carey Garden Club contributes floral arrangements. Parish officers will host and awards will be given to committee chairs.
Mr Jerry Gier Rt. 1 has returned from a nine day hunting trip at White Fish Falls Ontario Canada. He stayed at Bay Villa Hunting and Fishing Lodge owned by his father in law Paul Myers who has operated the lodge twelve years in Harpster.
The Blue Devils booster club hosts a meeting and hamburger fry at Waterworks Park on May 17 at 7 30. Attendees are asked to bring a mug and note a nominal fee.
The Big Fishing Derby at Garey Sponts man Conservation Grounds was postponed after heavy rains left the grounds flooded. The 1967 Carey Sportsmans Conservation Association Fishing Derby is now set for May 4.
Colby Oiler assumes duties as Carey Village Electric Department superintendent starting May 1 replacing Paul Van Dusen. A Marion native with West Virginia ties, he has 13 years as line foreman and most recently served as assistant superintendent in Dover Ohio. He and wife Dolly Glover have six children and are seeking a Carey home.
Mr and Mrs Elbert Tewell were guests at Flower shows in Memorial Hall Mt Vernon hosted by Knox County Garden Clubs and at Boke's Creek Community Garden Club in Ostrander. They attended a Nature and Conservation tour in Piketon visiting historic structures. Mrs Tewell serves as Regional Director of the O A G C.
The Week of May 15 20 is designated Mailbox Improvement Week by the Post Office Department. Rural carriers Mr McDaniel and Mr Williams report most patrons maintain neat weather protected mailboxes and neat approaches, aiding country appearance and safety.
The Church League held its annual bowling banquet at Vanlue Methodist Church on May 1. Richard Lee presided as awards were given to The Grusome Five and other standouts for high games and series for both women and men. Entertainment followed with songs and a cartoon drawing showcase. The next Monday featured Head Pin Tournament trophies for Deleota Kear, Virginia Lee, Bob Kar, and Robert Klingel.
The Carey Fire Department responded to a call at the Indian Trail Nursing Home to pump excess water from around the building. Despite bad weather, a large crowd attended the opening of a new cafeteria at Our Lady of Consolation, enjoying food and enthusiastic crowds.
The Dorcas Carey Library will be closed all day and evening on May 11 for a librarians workshop in Lima.
A teen dance is held Sunday May 14 from 8 to 10 30 p m in the American Legion recreation room with music by The Vibrators.
The Memorial Park Swimming Pool will reopen on schedule after summer repairs led by Village Manager George Dunn. The project includes sealing and resurfacing, new blacktop deck, concrete edge, and detailed specifications for concrete work and safety measures.
The Community League Banquet on May 3 at Bowl-Era Lanes drew 42 attendees. Gibson Sohio team won the league with members Jim Campbell Clarence Nash W Oge Ezz Keller George Richardson Jeep Gibson and RC Donelson. Henry Fredritz took high series 694 and Herbert Hendricks high game 276. Jim Campbell earned most improved bowler with a 20 pin gain. Gibson Sohio rolled high series 2903 and high game 1029.
A Bake Sale will be held at the Richardson Electric Store in Carey on Saturday May 13 starting at 9:00 a.m. Sponsored by the Youth Fellowship of Memorial EUB of Carey. Remember Mothers day is Sunday. Buy extras at the sale.
