Red Cross Day and Scholarship Tests At Local School

On Red Cross Day pupils contributed despite incomplete tabulations. Local seniors and juniors from Carey high school attended general scholarship tests in Upper Sandusky. Supt Driver assisted. A revival assembly was held at the Methodist church with evangelist Mr Trey. The Junior Classical League marked Latin Week March 11 to 17 with a Roman banquet.

SGT PAUL KIRIAN IN BATTLE CREEK

Paul Kirian was wounded in Belgium on January 3rd and flown home to Mitchell Field New York before transfer to Percy Jones General Hospital Battle Creek Michigan. His left foot was amputated and his aunt Mrs Urban Lorentz of Carey plans to visit Friday. His mother Mrs Martin Kirian is recovering in a tuberculosis hospital. Private Lawrence Kirian, another son, has arrived in Hawaii.

Richard Frederick Buys Carey Greenhouses

Richard Frederick purchased the Carey Greenhouses from Gusto Wunderlin, located at the corner of Lake and North streets. He appointed Clyde Jenkins as manager with full charge, while Wunderlin and family will stay temporarily to assist. Wunderlin had bought the greenhouses in November 1933 and came from Fostoria.

25th Anniversary Party at Legion Post 344

American Legion Post 344 and Auxiliary celebrate the 25th anniversary this Thursday evening at the Legion hall on S Vance Street. A potluck supper is served promptly at 6 30 o clock. Plans filed for Carey Cooperative Food Lockers project

Alt house and Jones of Mansfield submit plans to install cold storage lockers in Carey Cooperative Food Lockers at 4% Vance Street. They studied locker operations and praised the board for buying Burson property, calling the building ideal for storage and the location well chosen. Golf Course Muck Tied to Risner Farm in Carey Area

The Carey Times reports muck used for a Manila Philippines golf course came from land west of Carey owned by Lon Risner and his brother Cal Risner. Local barber and broker Risner confirms the material originated there under contract with J Finky Wemp of London and the Ghia Humus Products Co.

Clarence Tong Missing in Action

Private Clarence Tong age 18 son of Mr and Mrs Hobart Tong of West Street Carey is missing in action since February 25. He enlisted August 29 1944 trained at Camp Wolters Texas left for overseas January 1945 served with Company L 405th Infantry in Holland and was reported somewhere in Germany. He graduated Carey High School in May 1944 and has two brothers in service Robert Tong with an engineer regiment and Virgi Tong in the U S Navy.

Paratrooper Sgt OConnor Awarded Bronze Star for Heroic Service

Sgt Robert W OConnor son of Mr and Mrs Robert OConnor of Indiana received the Bronze Star for heroism during October 1 1944 near Holland. While heavy shelling and a fierce attack threatened his Company Ef he left cover to dispatch runners and maintained communications using a Signal Corps Radio keeping battalion command advised and aiding in stopping the German assault. He served with the 508th Parachute Infantry and enlisted in Indiana.

S Sgt Robert Heck aged 28 of Findlay suffered wounds in the upper left leg and is said to be recovering in a French hospital. He served with Patton's 3rd Army after enlisting August 13 1942 and training at multiple camps. He is the husband of Grace Firestine, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph Heck of west of Carey.

Bucyrus men fined for obtaining money under false pretenses

Two Bucyrus men named Harman and Coutts were arrested in Bucyrus after posing as roofers and charging Mrs. Ida Newcomer $106 for brief work on her Findlay Street home. Judge Remlinger fined them $100 each plus costs and jailed them 60 days. warrants and further charges linger, with reports of additional overcharging in Carey.

Soldier Ralph C Zender Completes Overseas Service

Pvt Ralph C Zender of the 14th Anti Aircraft Command finishes a year of overseas service with his battalion in the Northern Solomons. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Frank Zender of Carey Ohio. The unit previously served with the old 198th Coast Artillery National Guard from Delaware. The regiment sailed from the United States January 27 1942 for Bora Bora in the Society Islands northwest of Tahiti and has seen action abroad.

Mary Ellen Calmes Commissioned as Nurse Corps Officer

Miss Mary Ellen Calmes daughter of Charles N D Calmes of South Street has been commissioned to the rank of second lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. She reported to Fort Knox Kentucky last Thursday after serving as a nurse in the surgery department at Findlay hospital since her August 1943 graduation from St Francis School of Nursing at Columbus. Her brother James Calmes is taking a radio technician course at Dearborn Michigan.
