Wyandot county sets March 5 closing for signing corn-hog contracts at township committees and March 19 at the extension office. County Agent C F Christian notes 400 contracts on file and expects about 1000 if local sign-ups match neighboring counties.
Frank Haferd died at his son Ralph Haferd's home near Crawford after a long illness. Funeral mass was at St Joseph's Salem with interment in St Joseph's cemetery. He was born November 17 1845 in Baden Germany and emigrated to the United States as a child. He leaves a wife Margaret Hess Haferd deceased 1915, six children four of whom survive, twelve grandchildren, a sister Veronica Phillips and a brother Rudolph Haferd. He lived on the family farm in Wyandot County most of his life and was a devout Catholic.
The family expresses gratitude to neighbors and friends for kindness during the long illness and after the father's death. Special thanks go to Fr Paul for consoling words the choir for services those who provided cars pallbearers and those who sent flowers.
Charles M Beard was found guilty on two counts of embezzlement and misapplication of funds from the Findlay Savings and Loan Company. A motion for a new trial was deferred by Judge Sumner E Walters as Beard’s attorney burket indicated readiness issues. An appeal has been filed, and sentence may be deferred pending the appeal. The case goes to the court of appeals if a new trial is denied.
The infant son of Mr and Mrs John Snobarger died last Thursday at 11 30 at the home on West Findlay street. Born Feb 20 the child lived two days and had been ill since birth. Funeral services were held in Syracuse Indiana at the home of Mr and Mrs A Bower with Rev Pettit and Rev Ridenbaugh officiating. Burial followed in Syracuse cemetery. Surviving are the parents four sisters one brother dead in infancy and grandparents Mr and Mrs M E Rentfrow and Mrs Henry Snobarger of Syracuse.
We express sincere thanks to neighbors and friends who helped during our recent bereavement, to the Girl Scouts for their floral gift, and to Undertaker Goff for his services. Mr. and Mrs. John Snobarger and children.
Mervin Shafer bought the 80 acre Rangeler estate farm at a public sale. The property near Carey was appraised at 4240 dollars and sold for 2950 dollars.
Twelve teams from five counties compete Friday and Saturday in Carey for a chance to reach Findlay for next week’s district tournament. Schedule includes Tire vs Arlington, Salem vs St Wen Delin, Carey vs Tontogany, Chatfield vs Vanlue, with semifinals and finals set Saturday and a consolation game. Reporters from multiple counties and a Carey Times representative will cover results and relay them to United Press.
Surveys of all townships in Wyandot county will be under way by Tuesday February 27 to determine corn hog contracts. The Agricultural Adjustment Administration has ordered figures on corn acreage and hog production on farms with at least 10 acres of corn in 1932 33 and two broad sows. County Agent C F Christian asks farmers to give figures to local committeemen though they may not sign. By February 24 more than 400 contracts had been prepared. A second sign-up period begins February 26 at township halls and centralized schools. D S Myer Ohio agricultural adjustment chief recommends township centers be closed by March 5.
Mr and Mrs F E Phillips of north of Carey announce the marriage of their daughter Martha Phillips to Kenneth R Dame of this place. The ceremony occurred at Greenup Kentucky on Sunday February 18 with Rev M N Herald of the Methodist church officiating. Both graduates of Carey High School class of 1930. Mrs Dame is a Bliss College Columbus graduate of 1932.
Boy Scout Troop No 22 members raise funds to buy uniforms by selling Carey Times subs. They offer a 50-50 share with anyone who brings in five or more new subscribers. If you are not a regular subscriber, join in to help a Scout and get your name on the list. Watch for the Scout when he solicits you.
Last Thursday night at the Galt Hotel dining room 32 players contested 16 boards of duplicate contract. Dr and Mrs H K Van Buren won high north and south with Mr and Mrs C B Myers second. Mr and Mrs George Snyder were high east and west with Mr and Mrs Richard Frederick second. Prizes awarded to the winners and another session is planned for Tuesday evening March 6 with Harold Houk or George Newhard for details.
Last week’s Carey Times page features an April 1, 1904 flood scene from the Galt House in the upper right corner. The photograph lists Alonzo H Hunter rural mail carrier, William Chambers, Herbert Newhard Sr, George W Croker, night policeman, Henry A Kear, and E W Keefer owner of the livery barn. another man remains unidentified.
Everett Holt of Larue, a rural carrier for 10 years, is transferred to Carey and will take over Route 1 duties, succeeding J L Yohe.
A spray of springlike blooms from the Carey Greenhouses has drawn admiration from Times visitors this week, contrasting with the wintry weather.
All men interested in playing soft ball this summer should attend at the American Legion hall this Friday March 9 at 8 30 PM. Attendees will organize teams and set game plans for the season.
Feb 2 league games saw Calvert 36 St Wendelin 32, Fortoria 32 St Paul Norwalk 29, Carey 16 Crestline 25 Upper Sandusky 21. Calvert led the standings with a strong win, while Crestline and Upper Sandusky posted close scores.
Calvert High clinched the League of Six Nations basketball crown by defeating St Wendelin and finished undisputed first. Upper Sandusky missed a share, dropping to a three way tie for second with Crestline St Wendelin and Fostoria settling for third place. Carl Welter starred for Calvert with a pivotal move that sealed the win despite late danger.
Kiwanis Club Monday evening hosted Boy Scout Troop No. 22 with 19 members and Scoutmaster Richard Frederick present. Wm Hunter awarded certificates to A E Constien Dr L E Treece and Rev A C Rainsberger as troop committeemen. Mr Frederick as Scoutmaster. Constien presented charter and membership certificates to James Harris Richard Kitzler Robert Frederick Charles Harris Max Silverstein Stanley Montague T D Merrihew Harold Krout William Bakies Francis Bakies Isadore McLaughlin Leonard Nye Robert Stombaugh Joe Newhard Paul Burson Donald Wenner Talmage Huston Richard Roof Russell Cole. James Harris demonstrated wig wag signalling and T 1 Merrihew knot tying.
Ralph Smith of Fredericktown, an airman with the Byrd expedition at Little America, fell into an ice crevasse. The fall reawakened an old spinal ailment and a medical team 10,000 miles away coordinated tentative treatment as no doctor remains in Antarctica.
Mr George Lear of Carey and Miss Thelma Wise of Findlay were married Sunday forenoon at 1030 o'clock at the residence of Mayor S H Krebs on W North street. Mayor Krebs officiated. Witnesses included Mrs Krebs and son Donald, Mr and Mrs Joe Silverstein and son Max of Carey, and Mrs Nora Wood ward of Findlay. The couple will reside in Carey after next week. Mr Lear will be employed by Mr Silverstein.
Mrs Wm Leeder Mrs Nelson Turnbell Mrs Myrtle Perkins and others attended the inspection of Juno Temple Pythian Sisters at Findlay Tuesday evening last week with Mrs Mary Shaw of Cleveland grand chief as inspecting officer.
The third Thursday night Lenten service will be held this evening at Christ Lutheran Church at 7 30. The young people's division of the Sunday school will form the choir and provide special music. The pastor will present the third in a series of Lenten meditations.
The Memorial committee of District No. 29 will meet Carey Lodge No 407 this Thursday evening March 1. All local lodge members are urged to attend. Refreshments will be served.
Eight candidates for the position of postmaster at Sycamore will take an examination at the Carey high school building Saturday forenoon at 900 o'clock. Charles Calmes local civil service representative will conduct the examination.
A chicken Swiss steak supper will be held at the Methodist church on Wednesday March 7. A bazaar of articles to sell for $1 or less begins at 3:00 p.m. Supper served from 5:00 to 7:00 by the Dorcas Bible class.

Hundreds shopped during Bargain Days hosted by Carey merchants over Friday and Saturday. Clothing, department and grocery stores showed large sales gains while the Carey Times boosted circulation with 750 samples and 800 copies in Carey. No mail delivery Thursday due to Washington's Birthday observance.
Funeral services for A C Fagan 72 who died at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Sandusky City were held at his son Russell Fagan’s home on Findlay Street. The service was officiated by Rev C H Kern with mixed hymns. Interment followed at Spring Grove cemetery after an escort by Spanish-American War veterans from Earl Green post.
Acknowledging help during the death of husband and father Mr Alan Fagan the Fagan family thanks Rev Kern for comforting words the singers the Spanish American War veterans Earl Green Post American Legion at the grave and Undertaker P C Goff for efficient service.
Sportsmen and farmers are urged to attend a meeting at Catholic Hall this Thursday March 1 at 8 00 pm. A state conservation department representative will speak and wildlife motion pictures will be shown. Admission is free.
Short courses in vocational agriculture will be held Tuesday night March 6 at 8 00 in the high school vocational agriculture room. W L Arnholt will discuss School Taxation. On March 18 County Auditor B E Hudson will speak on county finances. Farmers urged to attend to learn farm accounts.
P B Hendricks recently retired as rural mail carrier from the Vanlue office after 30 years with only 31 sick days. Glenn Hile of near Vanlue served as his substitute for almost all of those years.
