The three day Franciscan educational conference began in Carey on June 17 under Our Lady of Carey Seminary. Nearly 50 to 60 friars from the three Franciscan families gathered to discuss Catholic missions in Africa Asia and the Americas and the need for financial and spiritual support for war damaged mission sites and underserved communities.

Water seepage into the sanitary sewer on Vance street caused cellars to flood during heavy rains. Auxiliary pumps were used at Vance and Nonth streets. Crews found a broken corner of a manhole cover in the creek bed, setting in enough water to fill an 8 inch pipe, and repaired it.

D F Herrick resigns as Carey city manager effective June 27 after council accepted the notice at the April 17 meeting. He leaves to become executive director of the American Public Works Association in Chicago, which has 28 organizations and 1,500 members. William J Heard of Bedford Indiana is named to succeed him at 4500 yearly, starting Monday. Heard is a licensed engineer and former post engineer at Greenville Army Air Base. he is married with two children aged 11 and 13.
