Redwood Trees Rarely Damaged by Fire or Insects
The redwood is unusually free from enemies and wind damage. Its thick bark resists fire, making it hard to kill by burning and insect attacks are uncommon. Lightning is the major force that can kill or shatter these trees. Most redwood reproduction occurs via sprouts, including from very old stumps.
Wood heat value compared to coal
Agricultural department investigations show that one standard cord of well-seasoned woods such as hickory owl beech birch maple ash elm locust or cherry equals about one ton of anthracite coal. A cord and a half of soft maple or two cords of cedar poplar or bass wood provide the same heat. One cord of mixed wood matches at least one ton of average grade bituminous coal.
