Eighth Annual Farmers Institute At Carey And Vicinity

The eighth annual farmers institute at Carey opened Friday with large attendance. W M Cook of Camden spoke on Economical Hog Raising stressing breeding, proper housing, and dental care to prevent milk fever. Friday evening featured music, recitals, and talks on plowing and soil texture. Saturday highlighted modern corn culture and future price trends for corn versus wheat.

Champion Corn Husker Earns Hancock County Title

Glen Hile of Vanlue wins Hancock County champion corn husker title. He husked 2,815 ears this season and earned $153.60 for the labor performed.

City Council Proceedings and Budget Measures

At Monday night’s council meeting present were Mayor Stahl and councilmen Dame Pahl Herbert Kear Jacoby Hart and others. The minutes show bills paid including Keefer and Hunter rent for hose wagon. Robert Drake labor and J W Weeks for dog killing and burial. The health officer Joseph F Wonder reported no infectious disease and urged moving the dumping ground. An appropriation for six months ending June 1 was read as first budget reading. The ordinance advanced to third reading and passed after suspending rules. The mayor was instructed to appoint two night watchmen. George W Croker and Michael Perl were appointed and confirmed. Dame was elected president pro tem. Last year’s committee structure was continued.
