The ninth annual Carey Farmers Institute met Friday and Saturday with record attendance. Adam Herbert presided. lectures covered machinery on the farm and dairy practices. Speakers emphasized modern equipment, balloting on fair policies, and improved fruit growing and farming methods.
A meeting of Crawford township teachers will be held at the township house Saturday afternoon at two o clock. Call Home Phone 300 when you have any news.
Dr. B L Wallace narrowly escaped an assault about 10 PM Tuesday as two or more men attempted to force him to surrender money near Main and Church streets after he had received a payment. He was struck on the head with a black jack but not seriously harmed and police searched the area without locating the suspects.
In honor of his seventeenth birthday, Willis Wonder was surprised Saturday evening at his parents home west of town. The gathering featured games and a taffy pull, with music by a male quartet: Earl Criger Erwin Wonder Frank Magers and Howard Heck. Attendees included Addie Thomas Fostoria Ethel Criger Florence Peters Ruth Wonder Theresa Schira Mamie Peters Martha Schira Hazel Wonder Frank Magers Alva Criger George Heck Earl Criger Howard Heck and Orville Magers.
A Salem township sleighing party on Saturday evening gathered at Mr. and Mrs. George Wright’s home three miles south of town. Music accompanied the evening ending with an oyster supper. Guests included Ambrose Shumaker family Walter Paul Martha, Henry Brooks family Omer Catherine Dorothea, Francis Bradman family Ola Alma John, and Howard Wright of Columbus.
On Sunday evening Miss Fern Peirce hosted a sledding party at her parents home, Mr. and Mrs. John Peirce, entertaining Upper Sandusky friends. Music and refreshments followed the outing with guests including Misses Rah Onians Florence Swilk Minnie Marchand Mary Hare Eva Hare and Messrs Leo Orians Howard DeWitt Robert Vogel Charles Baldur Walter Myers Glenn Hufford Chester Bristol.
A group including Mr and Mrs H Pierce Mr and Mrs A L Phillips and sons Russell James and Howard Joseph Starr Mac Starr and Miss Maud Starr enjoyed hospitality from Mr and Mrs D F Mincer and family at Mt Blanchard last Sunday The day was spent amiably and at noon a sumptuous dinner was served by Mrs Mincer.
Mr and Mrs Peter Shultz and their ten year old daughter Florence traveled from four miles north of Carey to town Friday to have two stitches placed above the eye after a fall at school last week left a forehead wound.
Friends of Miss Jessie Shaw held a post card shower Saturday for her birthday anniversary. Many beautiful cards and other presents were received and Miss Shaw expressed thanks.
The Sylamore Masons held a last Friday banquet with toast master Editor H C Ramsder of the Leader. A government examiner found Clerk Daniel Reynolds’s naturalization duties in order. Elmer D Brown ex mayor of Sycamore died of asphyxiation in Columbus after a room break in. he was born October 19, 1861, and survived by wife and daughter. Real estate transfers include Frank Ward to Ella Hollaran for twenty acres in Richland township and several other parcels totaling thousands. C D Hare sues Henry Kear for contract dissolution dating from 1903 over insurance business while Hare was clerk of courts. Emmett Young and Ross Julien of Mononcue were arrested for chicken stealing near Upper Sandusky, with motive tied to a dealer in Forest. they face grand jury and potential penitentiary time.
Mrs Selera Brodman daughter of Henry Brodman was helping grind sausage at a neighbor's home five miles south of Carey when her left third finger was mangled in a grinder. The finger end was amputated and a bone was broken. Dr Io N Ze attended.
A merry evening last week at Hoffbauer near Alvada featured Charles Cullet Frank Bees Michael Thom Willard Kinney Andy Greer Charles Fox Jacob Thon A J Kinney and Harry Fox. Guests played euchre and pedro, enjoying a social night in the countryside.
C E Cram earned two firsts and three seconds plus minor prizes with Columbian White Wyandots and swept all firsts with Buckeye White Wyandots. He also runs his enterprising poultry journal The Poultry Record and urges readers to send news by email with signatures.
