Marine Private Grant L. Niemann, son of Mrs. William Fox of 526 W. Findlay Street, returned home on 20 day recruit leave ending January 4 after basic training. He enlisted last July, suffered a back strain and seven weeks hospitalization during training, and reported to Camp Lejeune January 7 for four weeks of advanced infantry combat training before joining the 2nd Marine Division. He attended Carey High School before enlisting.

The Carey Band Mothers held their regular monthly meeting in the band room Monday evening. An amendment was made to the constitution that alterations and repairs on uniforms will be assumed by the Band Mothers Organization. Insurance of one dollar a year on uniforms for senior members is due. The 1960 program booklets were distributed. Refreshments featured a candlelit New Year table. committee in charge included Mrs. Richard Spayd and co-chairs among others.

Two Carey Marines were promoted to Lance Corporal. Richard E. Smiley of S Patterson Street and Dennis L. Yingling of 141 S Lake Street earned the rank. Smiley completed an eight month jet mechanics course with the 2nd Marine Air Wing at Cherry Point North Carolina. Yingling serves with the Marine detachment aboard the USS Springfield which has joined the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean for an eighteen month tour. Both are Carey High School graduates, class of 1959. Dennis enlisted in September 1959 and Dick in December 1959.

The Dorcas Carey Public Library board held its January meeting to elect officers with John Greer as president Dale Frazier as vice president Carolyn Newhard as clerk and librarian and Sam Wenner as assistant librarian. The board includes Greer Frazier Heck Klein Powell Vogel and Alden Smith. December circulation was 2304 and yearly total 30088 up 710 from 1959 with 204 adult and 184 juvenile books added. The library subscribes to nine magazines for youth and 56 for adults nine of which are gifts. A new board member will be appointed soon to replace Mr. Smith who is moving to New Castle Pennsylvania.
