Miss Gladys Wickwire, a reading specialist, visited Carey Elementary last week in two sessions at the West building. In first grade, Mrs Spensler's group welcomed the demonstration and a conference followed with teachers Mrs Martha Spensier, Mrs Marie Schwemley, Mrs Margaret Credielott, Mrs Treva Gunther, Mrs Bertha Crumrine, Mrs Gladys Crouse, Mrs Olive Lanning and Miss Wealtha Wentling. A second session occurred in Mrs Lanning's fourth grade with teachers Mrs Bertha Crumline, Mrs Gladys Crouse, Mrs Olive Lanning, Miss Wealtha Wentling, Miss Billie Schubert and Miss Opal Oman while high school students filled in.
The school balances oral and silent reading with phonic drills and dictionary use. Teachers stress comprehension and correct spelling, providing supplementary reading materials to ensure each pupil has abundant reading material for progress.
Fourteen Carey High School seniors sat for the Ohio General Scholarship Test at Upper Sandusky High on February 5. The statewide exam screens the top 40 percent of the 1948 49 class for scholarships and college prep.
High school students complete essays on the subject as part of the American Legion annual contest. Each entrant presents views on the topic with the best essay to be sent to the county Legion board for judging. One boy’s essay is highlighted among the submissions.
In Carey only two candidates filed nominating petitions for village council by February 2. Charles Hail and William Humbert seek election as three council seats will be vacant with Mapes Heck and Dible not seeking reelection. No primary will be held in May. remaining council members are Mayor Wagner and Bachar.
Mayor and Mrs. G C Wagner returned Wednesday evening from a four week Florida tour visiting Orlando Jacksonville Punta Gorda Fort Myers Fort Lauderdale Melbourne Titusville and Daytona. The trip included handshaking with Florida officials and a reference to Carey Ohio. Wagner noted his city lies about 50 miles south of Toledo.
Moretta and Alfred Jr six month old twins of Mr and Mrs Alfred Stansbery of 527 West Street are ill with pneumonia. Moretta was taken to Findley hospital last Friday after a week of illness and has double pneumonia requiring oxygen part of the time. Alfred Jr has pneumonia in his left lung and was taken to Findlay hospital Saturday morning, returning home Monday morning. Both children show improvement as Mrs Stansbery and Mr Stansbery share care with assistance from Mrs Ivan Green, mother of Mrs Stansbery.
A six member senate house commission was created by resolution to probe veterans housing in Ohio. Representative F K Casse and Representative L C Washburn led the move prompted by criticisms of housing activities by state and subdivisions. A $5000 appropriation was provided.
Mrs. Ella Smith of W Findlay Street will host the Carey Research Club Friday afternoon. She is assisted by Mrs. E C Harshberger. Roll call answers current events on research topics. Mrs. Mattie Myers and Mrs. L E Offenbacher lead the program. The subject is Health.
The Dorcas Bible class of the Methodist Sunday school will meet this Thursday evening with Mrs. Charles Walters of 330 E Findlay Street. Mrs. George Gardner and Mrs. Selah Wohlgamuth will be assisting hostesses.
The electric current will be turned off in Carey from 1 to 3 p m Sunday February 13.
Lester Vernon, 42, of Cincinnati, owner of Great Northern Nursery, was seriously injured when his eastbound truck was struck by New York Central train No. 7 at an unguarded E Findlay street crossing. Passenger William Mincy was also injured. fire department fought a small blaze as the train delayed about 20 minutes.
Carey representative F K Cassel has introduced a bill to have the Ohio archeological and historical society accept the Indian Mill near Upper Sandusky and dam land from Ward W Walton. The plan would convert the site into a state memorial called Indian Mill and set aside 50000 for improvements, with a companion senate bill by Senator D A Liggett.
The son of Mr and Mrs Norman Kromer born January 25 was baptized at 1 pm Sunday in Our Lady of Consolation Church. Rev Marcellus Lell conducted the ceremony. Sponsors were Mr and Mrs Robert Kromer of Kirby. The baptismal dress was made by Mrs Henry Snepth of Fostoria and has been used for eight since.
John Schwarz professor emeritus of history at Bowling Green State University will address Carey Kiwanis Club members at their Monday evening meeting. Schwarz reached compulsory retirement age last summer after 25 years on the Bowling Green faculty.
A public round and square dance is set for Monday evening February 14 from 7 to 12 pm at the Catholic hall. All ages invited to attend this Valentine dance sponsored by 4-H junior leadership. Admission 50 cents per person. Donald Derr, President.
The village clerk announces 1949 50 bicycle licenses are on sale at the clerk’s office in the municipal building. All bicycles must have new licenses by March. Virginia Jacob, Village Clerk.

Pfc Stanley Van Buren Bu zoeotong at Fort Belvoir Station Hospital Lab Virginia has a changed address on file. Documentation notes a reassignment affecting his station location.
C. Wil Lanning chairman of the Carey Community Chest reports the drive surpassed its $3,500 target by a few dollars. He thanks all captains solicitors and contributors for their support.
The Rev Wade H Koons pastor of Christ Lutheran Carey spoke to the Fostoria Rotary Club and guests at the YMCA dinner last week His talk titled Rotary Impressions urged friendship and acquaintance to broaden service to humanity He noted prior Rotary membership and roles in the Eggertsville Snyder club and Wittenberg College campaign committees.
Campaign director Leo T. Jones says the 1949 March of Dimes quota is at the half-way mark with only 4804 dollars raised. He urges immediate contributions to aid polio victims and notes Carey Community Chest will not solicit individuals. Jones will accept voluntary gifts via box 37 in Upper Sandusky.
Justus Lodge No. 393 met with Co C presiding and district and county deputies to lead the business portion. A chicken dinner is planned for 6 30 by the Pythian Sisters with Forest Sycamore Nevada and Carey listed among participating communities. A grand lodge speaker is expected.
W. E. A. News Review No 27 met January 28 at Mrs Doveld Donelson's Frederick Street home for a social evening with Pictures of Canada and a potluck lunch. On February 4 a business meeting at Moose Hall set an auction for February 11 with encouragement for broad attendance and item donations.
The village council expanded the Carey Memorial Park board at a Monday meeting adding Clyde Jenkins Frank Edwards and Paul Heck to the panel. Mayor G C Wagner and Harry Hale were already appointed earlier. existing members include Gale Newell H G Chambers Paul Krupp and Paul Bland.

The Methodist School will show a 30 minute sound film titled For All People on February 13 at 9 30 a m. It follows a young minister coping with prejudice in a multiracial city and shows local solutions to race hatred and juvenile delinquency. Cathedral Films produced the piece and the event invites all church members and friends.
The Rev Wade H Koons pastor of Christ Lutheran Church will serve as Director of Evangelism in Virginia for the remainder of February as part of a nationwide Lutheran council effort 1949-50. He will preach in New Market Staunton and conduct lay training conferences with coverage through the week. While away Christ Lutheran is to be supplied by Dr E Flack February 13 and Rev Lloyd G Ressell February 20 at Whittenberg College.
PFC Stanley Van Buren has been stationed at Fort Belvoir Virginia since January 4 joining the medical laboratory unit. He completed 17 weeks of recruit training at Fort Myer and earned expert rifleman honors among 108 recruits. He received private rank after December training and a two week furlough in Carey. He witnessed President Truman's inaugural parade.
William Tong of west of Carey returned to work as a Windsor evaporated milk truck driver Tuesday morning after a two week illness with pneumonia. Visitors during his illness included family members Garfield Tong Joan Janice Deam Don Lon Phillips Robert Tong Rev W B Smith and several Carey Fostoria and Findlay residents.
The Friendly Challengers class of the Methodist Sunday School will meet Sunday February 13 at 7 30 pm at the home of Mr and Mrs Harold Vaughn 118 S Muncie Street. Hosts are Mr and Mrs Elmer Gardner. Attendees should bring items for a white elephant auction.

The P R S club will be entertained this Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Floyd Shetler northeast of Carey.
The Blue Devils beat Clyde 44 to 23 in the quarter finals after a 30-26 overtime win at Clyde last week. They advance to semi finals versus Wharton then potential finals Saturday night. Carey also travels to Richwood Friday for a rematch with the Tigers and will close pre tournament play at Marion next Tuesday against St. Mary's.
Dr. Clarence C. Stoughton, 63, accepts presidency of Wittenberg College Springfield Ohio after January 20 board meeting. He will succeed Dr. Rees Edgar Tulloss who retires August 31 after 29 years. Stoughton first layman head in 104 years. Lutheran leader and author of two books.

Enlistees may earn a trade and above average pay while studying, with options to complete high school or gain college credits under the USAF I school plan. Mr and Mrs Myron Clingmen of Columbus purchased the modern seven room home at 308 E Findlay Street from Mr and Mrs W Loughley. The Loughleys, who moved into a new ranch style house west of Carey, were represented by realtor A N Stevens.
