The Driving class was honored to hear Patrolman Davis from the Findlay highway patrol station. He showed a film A Day in Court which was humorous and educational. After the film a group discussion was held covering state laws and other driving laws. The film and discussion were very helpful.
The teachers decorated rooms with evergreen and posters reading Merry Christmas. Red and green crepe paper and tinsel add to the festive mood. A large Christmas tree in the main hall, trimmed by senior girls, lights up the hall as the school wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
The Glee club held its weekly practice Monday night and presented a Christmas program Tuesday afternoon singing White Christmas Silent Night and Bring A Torch Jeanette Isabelle. After practice the Y-Teens Hi Y and F H A clubs joined in Christmas caroling for a joyful evening.
The Y Teens enjoyed a Christmas party in Miss Snyder's room Monday night with a glee club practice beforehand. Girls shared how Christmas is celebrated in other lands. A word-formation contest from Merry Christmas was held. Refreshments of ice cream and cake were served. The event ended with a gift exchange.
On Friday December 19 Mrs Ida Deidrick marked her 92nd birthday anniversary at her Vanlue home. Her children gathered with baskets and gifts in a surprise celebration attended by Mr and Mrs Lewis Knepper Mrs May Beck Mrs Rosa Lee and Mr and Mrs Earl Deidrick of Findlay. Mr and Mrs Clarence Deidrick, unable to attend due to illness, sent a gift.
Mrs Ida Dbidriock thanks friends for gifts and cards on her 92nd birthday. She expresses gratitude that their kindness will be remembered.
The Carey Times states it will publish on Wednesday December 31 due to New Year’s Day. All news and ads must reach the office one day earlier to be included in the next issue.
The Elks lodge invites all members and their wives to the annual dance. Foster Schrenk and his orchestra will provide music for dancing from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Lanning Motor Sales will be closed for inventory on December 30 and 31 and January 1.
The Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at Christ Lutheran Church begins at 11:00 pm with the theme Jesus Christ the Light of Life. Scripture includes Isaiah 9 2 7 Luke 1 26 33 and Matthew 5 3 14 16. Miss Elsie Howard will play carols and special music. The senior choir performs Jesu Bambina and O Holy Night with solos, as the church is decorated by a committee chaired by H B Snyder. Ushers and acolytes will assist as in past years.
Preliminary plans for an old time minstrel show sponsored by the Carey Junior Chamber of Commerce announced by Dr. H R Wenner. The all male cast will perform at Carey high school auditorium on February 4 and 5 with John B Rogers Brothers Co providing script and costumes. Frank D Jackson will direct with Lewis Hawk leading the orchestra. Proceeds to fund civic projects of the 1953 Junior Chamber of Commerce. talent drawn from Carey and nearby areas.
Mrs Harold Nye of 208 Dow Street underwent major surgery Wednesday of last week at Plan chard Valley Hospital and is recuperating satisfactorily. She had another operation a month earlier.
OCR text lists scattered military unit designations and post office routing strings from California and New York, mentioning Edmond Lanker W J Clouse and field station numbers and a postmaster address. The fragmentary data suggests mail routing and service labels rather than a cohesive report.
Our Lady of Consolation Church announces Christmas services at the Shrine with ancient carols and a Midnight Mass led by Rev Theodore Wickholtz. Seminary choir and schoolchildren perform, Masses run 6:15 Low to 10:30 High, with violin and organ selections and festive decorations welcomed by all.
John Risner announces a new barber shop on Route 15 just outside the village limits. The ad promises casual chats about real estate while offering haircuts and shaves, inviting locals to visit for a laid back vibe and “fun.”
First Methodist Church invites all members and friends to the Christmas Eve Communion service at 10:30. Organ selections include O Holy Night Ave Maria and Hosanna in excelsis. The White Gift Christmas offering for Methodist Homes children and the seed fund will be received at the service.
The Carey board of education met December 18 to tabulate bids on a 480000 dollar bond issue. Braun Bosworth Co of Toledo led with 244% interest and 41266 premium. Ohio Co of Columbus bid 2% with 2400 premium. The board accepted Braun Bosworth's bid and hired A Steinhauser and Son to print 480 bonds at 232.98. Miss Jennie Steen served as clerk.
On December 11 Mrs. Cora Corwin and her daughter from Jackson Michigan rode the New York Central toward Carey to attend the funeral of George Dill after a wreck killed Clarence Hoopf Jr. The train delay pushed services, and David Dill drove the Jack 69D party to Bristol's funeral home for the services. George Dill is the son of William and Mrs Dill, with Corwin as Dill's sister.
Ozmund A. Laven of Ss Bend Indiana owner of the Humus Co north of Carey announced that each of his 12 employees at the plant had been presented a Christmas bonus. His son Robert, a Denison University graduate from Granville, enlisted in the army in August and is now training at Camp Chaffee Arkansas.
A Saturday afternoon blaze destroyed the Logsdon Body and Paint Shop behind Miriam Purnell’s home at 231 W Findlay St. Cars and equipment owned by B C Harshberger and others were lost. A 16 year old helped evacuate a car before flames spread to a nearby barn. Firefighters faced ignition difficulties due to a dead battery and faulty carburetor on the village pumper.
Mt Gilead edged Carey 1 point in the final 9 seconds after a Jacoby jump shot tied the game but was ruled a foul on a Mt Gilead player. A late scramble under Carey's basket produced another Mt Gilead bucket, preserving the win. Reserves followed with a 49 to 32 victory led by McKinnon and Stoll.
Carey Businessmen's Association outlines rules for a Baby Derby awarding gifts to the first baby born on or after January 1 1963. Parents must live in Carey or via local rural routes and birth must occur after 12:01 am that date with birth certificate and attending physician statement.
Alumni basketball night features former Blue Devil standouts led by Red Snowhberger and Simonits with many others listed. Reserve and varsity squads will play at 7 30 p m, promising action and excitement for local fans as they watch how Pop built the current Blue Devils.
Myron Rife of Upper Sandusky earned a spot on the third All Ohio backfield and was the sole Northern Ohio League representative on the all state teams. Carey selections include Lyle Orians at center and Bob Cole at fullback, as the Blue Devils posted two losses.
William R. Young among 53 Ko rea veterans arriving in San Francisco to board the Gen. A. E. Anderson transport. He plans to fly home this week and join his mother Mrs Grace Young and sister Shirley in Bellefontaine for Christmas and New Year with relatives including the Grubbs and Thornton families.
The Carey Farmers' Community club will meet at p.m. Monday December 29 in the K of C hall. Committees are Program Mark Karr A G Wisner and W J Krupp. Refreshments provided by Henry Kimmel Lawrence Schmidt and F W Savidge.
