Tragedy at Route 509 Crossing Claims 20-Year-Old Hoept
Clarence A Hoept Jr 20 of Carey was killed when his Snyder Lumber Co truck collided with New York Central No 303 at Route 509 crossing. Coroner ruled accidental death. he died instantly from a fractured skull and neck injuries. Survived by parents two sisters and two brothers and grandparents. He was a Carey High School graduate and Navy Reservist.

Carey Village Council Free Parking For Shoppers
At the Monday meeting the Carey village council exempted shoppers from meter charges December 17 through December 24. Citizens and employees were asked to park outside the meter area to keep spaces open for shoppers. The council also reviewed the 1953 budget of 389425 with funds showing improvement aside from three deficits. A new police car, water works repairs, and meter replacements were noted. The alley behind the municipal building will be closed to trucks due to damage to the Lawn property. Safety signals for school areas were referred to the police chief for action.
