Free Parking For Christmas Shoppers Approved By Council

The village council granted free parking downtown the week before Christmas. Meters will be covered Thursday through Christmas Day. The move follows an annual request by local merchants. Council also discussed traffic visibility near intersections and lighting adjustments.

Blue Devils fall in league opener to St. Marys 65 to 45

St. Marys of Sandusky overwhelmed Carey 65 45 as Jim Tight led with 18 points and Rex Orians added nine. Carey could not reach double figures for a single Blue Devil, while St. Marys dominated rebounding and passing to secure the win.

Carey Blue Devils Rally Past Wharton Dragons 67 54

The Carey High School Blue Devils upset Trip Wharton’s Dragons 67 to 54 as Tom Greer led with 25 points and 10 field goals. Carey outrebounded 45 to 33 and improved passing to create open shots. The junior varsity also fell 49 to 48.

Fire damages Scheck's Market and apartment above

Oil leaking from a furnace at Scheck's Market east of town ignited Friday at 3 45 pm. Firemen battled flames that burned the ceiling and charred beams and floor of the upstairs apartment occupied by Mr and Mrs Walter Meyers family. Furnace and building damage estimated at $700, smoke damage to store and apartment, loss covered by insurance.

Police Court Docket Dec 10 Proceedings Include Fines

Police Justice W R Terry disposed of three cases on December 10. Ray J Coldiron 28 of 12714 S Vance Street was fined 200 dollars and 13.80 dollars costs for assault and battery and jailed at Wyoming county jail after inability to pay. charges filed by Carl Gatchell. Lela M Lowden 32 of Findlay received a 10 dollar fine and 8.60 dollars costs for speeding arrested by Officer H M Tong. Robert E Rood 37 of Bowling Green paid 10 dollars in fines and costs for failure to stop within a sure distance. Capt W R Jacob and Officer Paul F Pahl were involved.

Farmers Welding Course Starts January 8 at Carey High

Nutshell Farmers announces a five week welding course for farmers at Carey High School led by Carl Cupp Voc Ag. Instruction covers welding fundamentals. Hi Y Club Dec 11 1958 Meeting Notes

The Hi Y club met December 11 1958 with Dave Wilcox presiding. They discussed roller skating costs, planned gifts for the County Home at Upper Sandusky, and then held a basketball break with refreshments. Gene Walter and Eddie Davis led, Keith Richards read a poem, Carl Sharp read minutes, Ralph Musgrave gave a treasurer’s report, and plans were made to donate food baskets to a Carey family. Tom Saunders adjourned.

Christmas Tree Safety Tips From Carey FFA

David Wilcox of the Carey Chapter of Future Farmers of America warns Wyandot County residents that a Christmas tree can become a flaming torch unless cared for. The Ohio Division of Forestry says no tree is fire proof. Keep a fresh tree moist, place it away from heat, check light strings for frayed wires, unplug when unattended, and keep a fire extinguisher handy.

Wyandot county issued 3,825 dog licenses and 74 kennel licenses in 1958. Dog Warden Jack Starter reports 186 penalties paid and 108 half year tags bought. 1957 tag sales totaled 3,790.

Postmaster J. A. Schira announces Carey Post Office grossed over 40000 in 1958, meeting the threshold for first class status as of July 1, 1959. The change is described as largely a prestige upgrade with salary implications pending legislative updates.

Nativity Scene Enshrined with Rustic Stable at Library Lawn

The Carey Community Nativity Scene returns to the library lawn with a new rustic stable enclosure. Ray Gottfried of Lovell, an industrial arts student at Bowling Green State University, gifted logs and design work. Robert Gardner helped erect the structure and place the figures. Scheck's Market donated pine trees and Kiwanis Club provides lighting.

Last Call For Korean War Bonus For Ohio Veterans

Ohio veterans of the Korean War may apply for a state bonus with a deadline of December 31, 1958. Eligible claimants must have entered the U S Armed Forces between June 25, 1950, and July 19, 1953 and be honorably discharged or still in service. Santa Claus Coming Saturday at Carey Theatre

Elks Lodge No 83 of Upper Sandusky hosts an annual Santa Claus event at the Carey Theatre. Doors open 1:30 for a 2:00 showing of a 15-cartoon Christmas film for children through 8th grade. Santa distributes treats at 2:30 in the lobby. Cecil Laird is local manager and Paul Burson chairs the affair.
