Carey High School announces the 1948 49 basketball schedule with games listed at home and away. Notable dates include December 3 Bluffton December 6 Salem December 10 Mt. Gilead December 14 Marysville and December 21 Wharton. Open dates appear January 4 February 1 February 4.
The Junior Class staged A Lucky Penny on November 19 with the Pringle family and friends delivering the comedy. Norma Strahm, Richard Doran, Jeanne Allen, and others entertained between acts. The cast thanked Miss Thelma Clagett and Mr. Choyce Wentling for directing and stage prep.
Sadie Hawking a Success At Carey High as Halloween festivities wrap at 7:00 pm Monday. Students wore costumes from burlap to shmoolap with Daisy Mae and Lil Abner crowned top pair. Mr Wohlers as Marryin Sam performed a playful wedding ceremony.
Carey community leaders report the 1948 drive is 715 dollars under the 3500 dollar target. C W Lanning as chairman urges unvisited donors to send contributions and asks captains with incomplete reports to submit them promptly to Mrs George Snyder or to himself.
The 89th Anniversary observance at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church is set for Sunday December 5 with two worship services. The day features long‑time members receiving recognition and a 10 30 a m anniversary service led by Rev Wade H Koons and guest speakers Rev and Mrs Robert S Oberly of Philadelphia. The Jennie Larmonth Missionary Society marks its 26th anniversary with gifts to the church building fund and a reception for Pastor and Mrs Oberly after the services. The public is invited to attend both services.
The Carey fire department was called to a truck trailer hauling sheets of steel where dual rear tires burned due to a locked brake. About 150 dollars damage was reported. Later Forest Davis noticed smoke from a nearby bin at the Farm Bureau and alerted the firemen. the bin held canning husks and was heated, with the plant closed all day.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service will gather at the Methodist church on Wednesday December 8. Luncheon at 1:00 p.m. provided by Circle No. 4 led by Mrs. William Cole. After lunch a business meeting and program follow with the month’s topic Miners and the Christmas Light led by Mrs. Leora Frederick and devotions by Mrs. Dc. H. Baker.
The women of Christ Lutheran Church announce their annual bazaar and chicken dinner in church parlors. Bazaar opens at 11:00 a.m. Cafeteria lunch served 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Chicken dinner from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Adults priced at $1 and children 50 cents.
The Past Chiefs of the Pythian Sisters will gather this Thursday afternoon at 3 00. A dinner at 5 80 will follow, with a 250 Christmas exchange for Past Chiefs and their guests.
The Pythian Sisters will hold a bake sale Saturday December 7 at Joe Dible’s plumbing shop. The public is cordially invited.
The Catholic Ladies of Columbia will hold a meeting Monday evening at 8 o'clock in the K of C hall. The event invites members to attend and discuss upcoming activities.
A compiled roster shows service members and their addresses across Fort Sill Oklahoma Great Lakes Illinois and San Francisco California. Entries include Cpl Albert England Pvt Harold Bakies and James Stillberger with unit details and post office routing.
Three people hospitalized with burns after a Sunday night house fire in Springville north of Carey. Mr and Mrs Harris and their son Reuel suffered serious burns. Mrs Harris aided by son Reuel as Denver Hayes and Sally were rescued by their parents. Fire department arrived after the home and furnishings burned. Charity drive organized by American Legion to assist the Harris and Hayes families with clothing, furniture, and other necessities.
Mrs. Ethel Phipps of the A. J. King duplex on E North Street delivered two relics to The Carey Times. A worn copy of the West Liberty Banner dated August 16 1894 and a halftone image likely over 50 years old, possibly of a Carey building, are shared for reader identification.
Mrs. Peter Collet and daughters Teresa and Isabelle move from the farm four miles southwest of Carey to the Clay street house recently bought by Mrs. Collet. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Reinhart move into the vacated home and will form occupiers. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kitzler will occupy the former Reinhart tenant house.
Leland Strahm and Harry Fabiani opened Lighthouse Electric Shop at 280 E Whatley Street in the room once used by Jacob's Hood Shop. The store features electrical appliances including light fixtures and other gadgets.

The Ohio Power Company expands the Tidd power plant south of Steubenville with a 140000 hp turbine, boosting statewide capacity to serve 330900 customers. The $10000000 unit increases coal use to 44 tons hourly and water needs to about 288 million gallons daily as part of an $80000000, 25 year program.
D. A. Capell of Tiffin and J. F. Dible of Carey returned from a hunting trip with a 1200-pound bull moose shot by Mr. Dible. They left Carey October 25 and stored the meat at Carey Cooperative Food Lockers.
Harley Clark completed a two story building 32 by 70 feet on his farm three percent miles northwest of Vanlue. He uses it as a display room for used furniture and has it filled.
A series of births last weekend and early Monday in Findlay area hospitals includes Alvin Leonard Kemerley born 9 21 p m Sunday November 28 to Leonard and Leona Kemerley of Carey. Denis Leland Strahm born 4 55 am Monday to Leland and Norma Jean Gibson Strahm of Carey. Gregory Gene Wand born 8 11 pm Sunday to Billy and Jean Summerell Wand of Carey. and a 2 12 ounce premature daughter born 12 06 am Sunday to Wilbert and Julia Bohlen of Carey with the mother home Tuesday afternoon.
Leonard Reinhart of Fostoria and Howard Schreiner of Carey opened the Village Inn at Alvada. The grand opening is Saturday December 4. The new building is now open daily from 1 a.m. to 1 a.m. Soups, sandwiches and other foods will be served.

Carey Blue Devils begin their season with a Friday night game against the Bluffton Pirates amid early results and last season’s 46 to 32 win over Bluffton. The team travels to Salem next Tuesday to face the Salem Corn Huskers after recent losses to St. Mary’s and Lima.
The First Methodist Church hosts a covered dish Family Night Fellowship Supper on Thursday December 2 at 6 30 p m The program features the motion picture My Name to Ham set in postwar China showing Christian cooperation and adversity The event is organized by Circle No 3 of the W S C S and attendees should bring a covered dish and their own service items
The American Legion Auxiliary held a November 22 meeting electing officers including President Mrs. Robert Frederick and Secretary Mrs. Edgar Keller. New committees cover Child Welfare Rehabilitation Community Service National Defense Americanism Pan Americanism and more with membership drive details and an initiation planned for December 27.
Careyuette No. 2198 Fraternal Order of Eagles announces district initiation Sunday afternoon December 12 at the Eagles hall. All members urged to bring candidates. Refreshments served and in the evening Headell's orchestra will furnish the music for a dance.
The Carey Schools Band Metharg club will meet in the high school building Monday evening December 6 at 8 o clock. There will be a white elephant sale after the business session. A good attendance is urged.
