Carey Epworth League Wins Third Honor Plaque at Lakeside

The Carey Epworth League earned its third consecutive Honor League plaque at Lakeside Institute by meeting all 12 requirements. Five members Cora Ellen Schira Joan Myers Norman Huffman Don Mitchell and Jack Tracy graduated. Jack did so in absentia after completing the winter institute in Carey. Dow first attended with the Carey group, paying his own way from Wayne Michigan. The league supplied cottage rent chaperon costs and most dining hall expenses. Rev and Mrs Tinsler joined for the Lakeside visit. Mr Tinsler edited The Breeze and was reelected Lakeside commission member for 1938-39.

Local playground champions named with multiple sports

Bob Strahm topped the batting league with 23 hits in 50 at bats for a .460 average. Tommy Krom won the horseshoe title with 7 wins in 8 games. Virginia Kurtz took girls tennis with 37 of 42 wins. Amos Black earned the softball medal for 47 runs. Porky Strahm and Paul De Amici claimed golf balls after a 15 2 game win by Pilephaar's over the Dunns. 121 participants logged 668 total attendance in the summer program funded by the board of education, community chest, Carey Kiwanis, Eagles lodge and others.

Five young women at St Francis Convent in Tiffin received the Franciscan habit today and took new vows. The group includes Marguerite Lumber jack Carey becoming Sister Marty Agatha and Agnes Young Sandusky becoming Sister Mary Florian, Teresa Diller Coldwater becoming Sister Mars Adela, Lorene McKinnon Carey becoming Sister Mary Roberta, and Irene Kleman Toledo becoming Sister Mary Maurice.

Death in Columbus for Forest Wohlgamuth at 68

Mrs Ida Newcomer receives word of the death of her brother Forest Wohlgamuth aged 68 in Columbus Ohio. Undertaker Fristoll will transport the body. Funeral services set for 3 p.m. Friday at Bristol Funeral Home on Findlay Street.

Camp Meeting Closes at Byal Park Findlay

The 42nd annual Hancock County Camp Meeting ended Sunday with capacity crowds. Rev H M Couchenour preached morning services and Rev Arthur Vegs spoke in the afternoon. Two trustees were elected Greely Marshall and Lester Fruth. Virgil Thomas was reelected president Edgar Thomas secretary treasurer and George Fisher vice president. The 1939 camp meeting will be held August 3 to 13 at Byal park with Rev J M Hames and Rev Bona Fleming as workers and Ira Woods duo as song evangelists.

A daughter, Alice Margaret, was born to Mr and Mrs Virgil Schlachter near New Riegel. Audrey Spiller is the former Miss Audrey Spiller of south of Carey. Another daughter, Rosalyn Ann, arrived Tuesday to Mr and Mrs Russ Wickiser, south of Carey. A 9-pound son, George Everett Jr, was born to Mr and Mrs Everett Metter of Fremont. Mrs Metter was Wiss Vorearet Merrihew. The Metters moved from Carey about a year ago.

Thousands Flock to Shrine of Consolation Pilgrimage

Thousands gathered at the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey for the Pilgrimage celebrating the Feast of the Assumption. An estimated 20,000 came from Cleveland Toledo and other areas for Masses a procession and benediction with intercession sought for Mary. Visiting clergy and seminarians joined local faithful in this year’s religious observance with plans for next week’s events and more pilgrims.

Trustees Organize At Methodist Church Board

At the August 11 meeting the trustees newly elected at the fourth quarterly conference organized by choosing George Ash as president W Z Campbell as vice president and W Lanning as secretary treasurer.
