Steel belts replace leather in power transmission
A Charlottenburg Germany factory has developed steel belts as substitutes for leather belts or rope drives. The belts shrink to about one sixth of leather size, do not stretch, and allow narrower pulleys or smaller shafts. A four inch wide belt one fifth inch thick can transmit 200 to 250 horsepower at 5400 feet per minute, with tests showing speeds up to 12 000 feet per minute.
