A letter dated April 8 1907 from Ritzville Washington recounts a westward trip from Wharton to Washington via Pennsylvania Railroad and Northern Pacific. It praises railroad staff, notes crowding, cites Ritzville as a wheat shipping hub, and mentions future move to Kennewick valley along with regional job wages and local politics including county auditor expenses and a hospital case involving Logan Natural Gas and Fuel company.
In a suit tried Friday before Justice James Howl a jury found for plaintiff Caldwell for 39,560 dollars after the horse of Benjamin was injured when Caldwell’s horse kicked it in Benjamin’s barn. Attorneys H G Chambers for plaintiff and Franklin Franks for defendant.
Otto Tawney a Carey resident died after a railroad yard accident while unloading dirt near Lovel. He lost his grip on a car end as two cars bumped, his leg broke and internal injuries proved fatal. Born in West Independence, 24, he lived in Fostoria before moving to Carey. Funeral held at West Independence with class members as pallbearers.
Last Sunday night churches in the city held a mass meeting at Snyder's opera house to promote a local option campaign. The venue was packed with standing room crowded. Revs Harpster Bowers Olive Williams Mrs Felker and Mrs O Brien spoke and Bernice Karns performed. a male quartet sang. Nearly twenty dollars was raised to cover meeting expenses and to fund future actions. Card responses asked if attendees supported a local option election and financial backing.
