Canton Chamber Eyes Bigger HQ After Member Surge

The Canton Chamber of Commerce reports 1318 new members and plans to reach 1500 with a large public demonstration within two weeks. Current quarters above U. N. Vicary store on Market are leased until March 1 and larger headquarters are deemed necessary. Directors will form new committees and assign civic tasks as preparations for the demonstration proceed.

Move for New Trial in Kalane Murder Case

A motion for a new trial was filed Saturday in the Frank Kalane murder case, alleging newly discovered evidence. Kalane, a Polander, was found guilty of second degree murder for killing Vladimir Koonchook by a beer bottle blow. Three co-defendants, also Polanders, were indicted and will be tried next week.

Death of Horace Weddell marks end of hotel era

Horace Weddell, ninety, a Cleveland builder who watched the city grow from 400 to 650000, died today. He retired from the hotel business forty years ago.

Miners Mourn 195 Dead At Hillcrest No 20 Explosion

Flames swept Hillcrest mine No 20 after a massive blast wrecked the tunnel. Of 236 workers who entered, 195 were killed and 41 escaped. 95 bodies already removed, 100 remain entombed as inquests are planned and coffins ordered. One supervisor among the missing, and a rescuer narrowly escaped when his boot trapped him.

Hurts Fatal 39 Year Old Frank Custer

Frank Custer a Canton resident and former president of the Canton Eagles died in Massillon state hospital from a complication of diseases following an accident last year when struck by a moving Akron car as he alighted. He leaves a wife a child his parents three brothers and four sisters with services to be held at his home and burial in Westlawn cemetery led by Rev. Lawrence.

Man Offers Money to Tie Kidnapping to Saloons in Illinois

A National Brewers' Association representative visited Louis Patmont and C F Witte in City last Sunday. He offered money to get Patmont to sign a statement denying saloon involvement in his kidnapping at Westville lil. Patmont refused and the emissary warned of trouble and a national Liberal Press scheme. The name will be announced at City Auditorium and First Christian Church on Sunday.

Plan to Obtain Consent for Right of Way Extension

Currie expects a Canton meeting with city officials next week to discuss extending the car line to General Stamping Co. via Winfield Way NE between Mahoningrd and Grace au. Legal forms were given to Mayor Stolberg by attorney John C. Welty to secure property owner consent. Would Teach Bird To Fly Falls 30 Feet

Glenn Sanford eleven son of Mr and Mrs John D Sanford fell thirty feet from a shade tree in front of 526 Prospector while trying to teach a robin to fly. He landed on his head as bystanders watched in horror. He was unconscious and later rendered conscious. doctors reported his prognosis as serious with recovery doubtful.

Jack Frost Returns After Rain Storm in Canton Area

Following a heavy rainstorm in Canton and nearby areas on Friday, frost was reported in and around the city and in Osnaburg with temperatures dipping to 35 degrees. The cold night caused slight crop damage, though no other reported crop losses in surrounding areas.

City seeks right of way for sewer line to Steinmetz plant

Appropriation proceedings began in common pleas court Saturday to compel farmer C Hoverland near Howenstine to sell a narrow strip of land for a sewer main to the Steinmetz sewage disposal plant. The action targets Hoverland's farm to secure the easement needed for routing.

Mrs Vaurron Falls Ill in County Jail

Mrs Clara Vaurron arrested Friday on a charge of unlawful operation became ill in the county jail Saturday. Sheriff Oberlin summoned the jail physician Dr Lawrence and she recovered shortly after. No additional arrests in the Vaurron case on Saturday materialized as the investigation continues with possible new affidavits in a few days.
