Marines Push Through East Wood in France Victory

American Marines cleared the important east wood five miles west of St. Thierry with heavy German losses and at least 200 prisoners captured. German attacks on trestles were repulsed as French and American forces press the Marne and Oise fronts with continued counter moves and new prisoner tallies.

Stark Boy Credited With Sinking German Submarine

Ernest Weirich of Massillon a navy gun pointer on a U S transport fired the first shot within six feet of a German submarine periscope two days from France. Six later shots missed the periscope by up to 20 feet yet the sub reportedly went down. Weirich enlisted at war start and has since made several France trips with convoys and earned honors for his precise aiming.

Wheeling Yards Opened For Use In 1917 Construction

The Wheeling and Lake Erie R R opened its Gambrinus yard southwest of Wheeling, a $200000 project under construction since June 6 1917. It will include a 100000 gallon water tank and yard office, with 98 253 feet of 90 pound track totaling about nine and a half miles. A round house is planned for later.

Four Men Die From High Tension Wire Accident in Washington

In Washington on June 12 three men and a fourth were electrocuted when a high tension power wire fell across a fence. Carl Knodel 23 George 26 Cornelius Weightman and Jey High 50 were instantly killed as they attempted to rescue others and climbed the wire fence.

Canton Nurses to Serve in Red Cross Army

Canton will enlist half of its available registered nurses for military service through the Red Cross. J. H. Himes reports 28 new enlistees since Friday, aiming to reach 39 of 78 by Thursday noon, with substitutes to care for patients at home.

Stark to Raise Fare on Freight and Passenger Lines

The Stark Electric Co and the N O T seek passenger rates of three cents per mile and a 25 percent freight charge rise. They filed with the state utilities commission Wednesday to harmonize with recent steam railroad increases ordered by Director General McAdoo. The request ties with two other electric railways in the state, The Alliance and Ma.

War work rush doubles Canton foundry workforce

The Canton Steel Foundry Co in Canton, allied with Morgan Engineering Co, plans to double its local staff and extend its plant to meet rising war orders. About 1,000 workers are employed. the firm needs moulders, caremakers, cranemen, millwrights, electricians, pipe-fitters and other mill and foundry workers. The company has set up a housing bureau to help incoming workers find dwellings.

Will Say Mass For Canton Boy Killed At Front

Private Joseph Frentzell of Canton was killed in action on the western front in France June 3. A military requiem high mass will be said at St. Pauls Catholic Church Thursday at 8 am by Father Zierolf with the U S flag adorning the altars. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Peter Frentzell. News of his death reached Canton Tuesday.
