A Rio Grande freight engine 1140 exploded one mile east of Florence at 6:30 am killing Engineer Thomas Erwin Fireman W G OBrien and Brakeman C B Gooch. The wreck destroyed the front of the train and scattered debris. an inquest is opening to determine the cause.

John T. Sanders of Florence reports a half day Saturday and a few hours Sunday for fifty trout from Beaver creek. Sizes range seven to sixteen inches with two fish near two pounds. Sanders and Ira Burroughs claim Fremont county champion status with a test soon to settle the dispute.

Trusty escapes from penitentiary farm to hills

H B Ward a trusty at the penitentiary farm northeast of the city limits escaped last night riding a prison horse. He left little trace and guards search in all directions. Ward No 6909 has three years and a half sentence for horse stealing. Ten weeks remain to serve before September first. A $50 reward is offered.

A roof garden is being built over Miller's ice cream and confectionery at 418 Main Street Canon City. A third floor addition will create a 30 by 80 foot resort offering music and refreshments in a luxurious setting for summer use.
