Supreme Court Justice Black allowed Johnson to seek his place on the Texas general election ballot for U S Senator despite a lower court injunction. Texas officials began withholding certification until higher court word arrives, while Johnson sought mandamus to force certification and restrain opponent Coke R Stevenson from interfering.
Justice Hugo Black, staying a federal injunction that blocked Lyndon B. Johnson’s Texas Senate nomination, warned that courts may not suspend a state election without clear statutory authorization. He emphasized the need for statutes, rejecting federal courts’ power to conduct state elections, and said he would stay the case pending Supreme Court review. The ruling came from a Fort Worth federal judge’s temporary injunction.
Giles Ethridge of Corpus Christi underwent an operation early Monday at Newton Memorial Hospital and is reported to be improving. He has many friends in Cameron who wish him a speedy recovery.
A 12 ounce violin made in Japan is on display at The Herald plant. It belongs to W. M. Brown of Maysfield who bought it years ago. The instrument has a fine tone and Brown, a violin collector and piano player, is out of practice but may sell to any interested bidder viewing the fiddle.
Cameron newspapers received no press passes for football games in 1948 while other passes were issued. The Cameron Enterprise and The Herald were not included, and the reason for the snub was not understood.
Drivers on highways near businesses and residences must stop when meeting or overtaking a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. They may pass only after stopping and proceeding at a prudent speed not exceeding ten miles per hour with caution for the children's safety.
Mrs Jimmy D Chapman and daughter Emma Sue 7 remain in serious condition after a Friday evening crash on Highway 77 south of Rockdale. Emma Sue is unconscious. Jimmy D Chapman was killed in the three car wreck.
A fine specimen of a weasel was killed Monday night by Keith Blankenship on his farm near Buckholts. The animal attacked chickens and was brought to The Herald for classification. Weasels are small mammals related to the otter and native mainly to Europe.
Each candidate for the place campaigns actively to win votes and townspeople are urged to support the girls of their choice. The notice frames the activity as a community effort to influence an election outcome.
H. H. Coffield hosted a Friendship Ranch gathering for Milam County Scouts and Heart Of Texas Council members on September 23 drawing about 2000 guests. The day featured a seven event swimming meet, trick riding and roping by Lamb Sisters and Will Winters with Cimerron, plus a barbecue. The Heart Of Texas Council elected Coffield Area President and awarded Silver Beaver honors to Temple, Shilo, and Rockdale volunteers.
Drunkenness cases dropped to six with five in city court and one in Justice Court. The usual minimum fines include $14 for the drunk and $1 to the city. $5 to the arresting officer and $5 to the City Attorney. $3 to the Mayor. Jail meals add further city loss.
The Cameron Council moved a first reading on Southwestern Bell Telephone Company rate hikes for business lines up 5 cents a day, residence lines 2 cents, and party lines 1 cent. The ordinance awaits two or three readings and would take effect within 30 days, as the company expands to serve 150 rural customers with new switchboards.
Cameron residents will witness a new field exhibition at Yee High Athletic Stadium when the Regional Band Marching Contest unfolds in two parts. Inspection, led by Col. Richard J. Dunn and aided by Dr. R. A. Tampkre and Weldon Covington, will judge neatness, instrument condition, commands, alertness, and flexibility. The field drill portion follows next week.
Tom Cole of Baylor University has been named choir director at First Baptist Church. The graduate student in music will lead Sunday rehearsals at 2:00 p m with Rey Burke as assistant choir leader and Mrs. Francis Cox as organist.
A Friday 6:50 p.m. crash on Highway 77 south of Rockdale killed Jimmy D. Chapman and left his 12 year old daughter critically injured. Wife, unconscious, and W. L. Sanders of Rockdale, driver of the other car, were severely hurt. All hospitalized in Cameron's St Edwards. Investigation by Jack Gaines, Texas Highway Patrol, notes a possible third car involved.
Milam county farmers have sold seven and a half percent of this year's cotton while 75 percent remains in the government loan. A. E. Sanders AAA director reports 17 and a half percent of harvested cotton still in storage, with the bulk already gathered. The county's loan pool percentage is said to be the largest on record.
John Carter and nephew Lehman Black of Arab Alabama are in Cameron for a few days visiting relatives including Grady and Mrs. Allen. Carter teaches in Marshall County Alabama while Black runs a furniture business in Arab. Relatives include G W Allen 92, Baxter Hughes of Freeport, and Hensley family links to Ad Hall Milano Homer Allen.
Mrs. Anton Hutka and her two sons from Buckholts were welcomed visitors in Cameron for a day this week, sharing time with local friends and enjoying the town.
L. G. Smith, longtime Cameron Chamber of Commerce manager, prepared to resign at a Monday meeting as he reportedly accepted a key position in New Braunfels. He has discussed the move, received approval, and is believed to depart in early October. The Daily Herald planned to seek his public statement Tuesday.
Father Ben Holub praises the Marak parish picnic sponsored by SS Cyril and Methodius Church. He thanks attendees donors and Cameron business leaders for a huge turnout with net income around five thousand dollars.
Polio believed to be the cause as 16 year old Betty Boyd, daughter of Mrs. Mattie Boyd of Cameron, is hospitalized in Waco. She worked at Weidemann Pastry Shop and fell ill Friday morning. Dr. J L Walker suspects infantile paralysis but awaits full facts for later confirmation.
