Belton Woman Hurt In Car Crash Near Pettibone
Mrs. Eula Safley of Belton suffered a fractured hip and other injuries when her 1949 Ford skidded on loose gravel and overturned in a ditch on highway 36 near Pettibone. Sheriff Black reported she was thrown clear, an ambulance transported her to St. Edwards Hospital. She was en route to Lake Charles Louisiana and is sister of former State Senator Roy Sanderford.

Francis Cox Yee High School band director announces Texas Interscholastic League sponsorship and first postwar event. Mail Robbery At Santa Fe Station Reported
Sheriff Carl C. Black said mail sacks in the baggage room were slit with a knife early Tuesday morning at the Santa Fe Station. The thefts appeared to occur through a small opening or under the sliding door. Parcels were found scattered in a nearby park with a pair of shoes valued at 15 dollars missing from one box. False teeth mailed by a Cameron dentist were recovered in the park site. Ernest Paschall and local officers investigated.

Milam County ginned 10 435 bales of cotton up to September 1 as reported by R W Upshaw special agent for the Department of Commerce. The Herald notes this is the first publication of the report and that the 1948 crop shows nearly three times the ginning total of the same date in 1947 when 3 399 bales were counted.

Weekend arrest report lists 21 cases across courts
Over the weekend officers filed 21 cases with three in city court and 18 in Justice Court. The city cases were all drunkenness. In Justice Court there were drunkenness, disturbing the peace, an aggravated assault, carrying a pistol and reckless driving. A knife incident during a dance at Greta's in the Black Belt led to Richard Bailey being taken to Newton Memorial and Willie Holloway being arrested. Warren Lockhart, a white Caldwell man employed in Cameron, faces reckless driving and pistol charges. arrest occurred Saturday afternoon.

More Money Sought for Miller Springs Dam
Washington September 21 Representative W R Poage says army engineers have asked the Bureau of the Budget for a sizeable sum in next year’s budget to add to existing Miller Springs dam funds. Construction has not begun with $500000 already appropriated. contracts may be awarded next year as engineers cite cave discoveries and the need for sufficient funds to avoid work stoppages.

Dallas reports James C. Cantrell president of the Texas Rural Roads association says mud and bad roads threaten rural population shifts from Collin County and calls for more than 20 million dollars to fix roads. Governor Beauford Jester proposes 20.6 million for all weather school bus roads.
