Lonnie Beard, 57, farmer from the Conoley community, agreed to a 3 year Texas prison term for the murder of his son in law Noel D Collins. No jury was impaneled and Henry county witness Melvin Collins testified briefly.

Cotton Receipts Rise at Cameron Compress

The Cameron Compress reports 19 000 bales received with 15 000 bales sourced locally by Thursday night. P W Davis notes the yard holds more cotton than in recent years and that receipts include shipments from outside the county and gins hauled in by farmers.

Lillie Pratt Held in Loraine Smith Murder

Loraine Smith was stabbed to death on West 15th Street near the Bubba Nelson cafe in Cameron around 11 p.m. Sunday October 3. Lillie Pratt, held on murder charges, allegedly stabbed Smith, whose death occurred before reaching Newton Memorial Hospital.

Voters face a broad choice in the November 2 election as an eight column ballot includes eight constitutional amendments plus party columns. Massey court upholds nine year term in kidnapping case

The Court of Criminal Appeals at Austin affirmed Dr. Ola Dee Massey the Waco dentist sentenced to five years in prison for kidnapping for the purpose of extortion. The ruling follows her 1947 Milam County conviction and involves the abduction of her late aunt Mrs. R. H. Johnson and related thefts, with potential for a rehearing.

Drunk Driver Fined Fifty Dollars in County Court

G. C. Orr pleaded guilty to driving while drunk in open court and was fined fifty dollars plus costs by Judge Dan Tyson. The total near seventy five dollars. The notice states that in all drunk driving cases owners must surrender their driving licenses.

Benefit Claims To Be Explained Here

Cameron residents can learn about Federal Old Age and Survivors Insurance from a representative of the Austin Social Security office. The official will be at the Old Age Assistance Office in Cameron on Tuesday October 12 at 1 00 p m to help file claims obtain new and duplicate Social Security Cards and check wage records.

Cameron Girl Wounded When Gun Falls From Bed

Miss Marie Maddox a 16 year old Cameron girl narrowly escaped death when a pistol placed between mattresses discharged as it fell to the floor. She suffered a severe leg wound and was taken to St Edwards Hospital. Daughter of Mr and Mrs Grady Maddox of Ben Arnold she worked at the Barmore residence and was moving a mattress when the accident occurred.

Honest man returns purse with $178 in Cameron

Ervin G. Kaslon of Giddings found a purse at the Santa Fe underpass in Cameron and brought it to Sheriff Carl C. Black. The purse, belonging to Arlie Welch of Waco, lost $130 in a check and $5 in currency. $43 in currency remained scattered. Sheriff praised Kaslon for honesty.

Man Who Passed Bad Check Held on Forgery Charges

Albert L. Saller who passed a $25 check at Brannon Service Station Minerva in August 1947 is in jail here on forgery charges. Sheriff Carl C. Black brought Saller from LaGrange jail Friday. He is alleged to have forged a check on the Bradford Transport Co of Dallas and was arrested in Hallettsville earlier this week after months on the trail.

Two Major Projects Join $50,100 September Permits

City Secretary W H Stafford reports September building permits totaled 50100 with two large projects making up the bulk. A $30000 recreation building at St Monica's Church and a $20000 J C Penney Co store expansion in Cameron account for the main share. Repairs fill the rest. no new residences were issued. The year’s nine month average stays high, with Penney’s store advancing toward holiday operation.
