Four Cameron Teens Injured in Two Car Crash

Four Cameron teenagers from Temple Junior College suffered injuries in a two car collision on US 190 a mile south of Rogers. Johnny Springer was seriously hurt with a fractured skull and minor cuts. The others, Stanley Price Roy Wohleb and Aileen Ruth Pilling, received cuts and bruises and were treated at Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple before release.

Negro doctor saves youth at collision near Rogers

Eyewitness says a Black physician arrived at a two car crash one mile south of Rogers and saved Johnny Springer 18 Cameronite with first aid. Springer had a fractured skull and was treated at Scott and White Temple. the doctor’s name and address were not known.

Milam County National Guard unit under Capt. James T. Terry prepares for active duty with drills October 1 3 and 10. Plans call for reporting to home station then Fort Polk Louisiana about ten days later. McNamara outlined the September 19 call up affecting 35 Cameron men and six from Rockdale.

Mrs. Bridgewater Former Teacher Dies in Corpus Christi

Funeral services for Ola Mae Bridgewater 54, former Cameron and Robstown teacher, were held in Cameron and Corpus Christi. She died after months-long illness in a Corpus Christi hospital. Survivors include husband, mother, three daughters, two brothers, and five grandchildren.

Zone 3 To Name District Supervisor in Central Texas Soil District

Zone 3 landowners will vote Tuesday October 3 at 7 30 p m in Cameron District Courtroom to elect a supervisor for the Soil Conservation District. Eligible voters include landowners 21 and older and their wives. Edwin Fischer of Buckholts is the current district supervisor.

Watershed Vote Denies New Tax Bond in Milam Area

Voters in Elm Creek Watershed rejected a $100 000 bond issue 479 to 348 at three polling places. The defeat ends a bid to raise the tax from 10 to 25 cents for dam maintenance, delaying a potential $5 5 million federal dam project affecting 192 000 acres across Milam Bell McLennan and Falls counties.

Milam Jury Rules for Suttles in TEIA Suit over Alcoa Death

A Milam District jury awarded $12,500 to Bernice Suttles and children in the case against Texas Employers Insurance Association after Bernice Suttles’ husband died of a heart attack at an Alcoa potroom on May 16, 1960. Attorneys argued heat fumes and exertion contributed to the death. TEIA plans a new-trial motion. The same case had a mistrial last April. Jurors named.

Final payments on the 1961 Feed Grain Program in Milam County

Milam County farmers are close to finalizing 1961 Feed Grain Program payments. Some operators have not signed final payment agreements at the Cameron ASC Office, delaying completion. The 1962 program and 1962 Wheat Stabilization signup will follow, with signups and mandatory diversions required for wheat acreage and conservation practices.

Milam Red Cross Fund Grows For Carla Victims

A $50 check from G. A. McDermott of Cameron lifted Milam County’s Hurricane Carla disaster fund to $250 this week. Chair Maxwell and others urge residents to donate up to $1,228 for South Texas relief. F. A. Marek contributed $200 as the first local gift. Donations are handled through the County School Superintendent at the courthouse and used immediately. Used clothing, shoes, and blankets are being collected at the old Sunday School Annex of the First Baptist Church for distribution to affected families.
