Buckholts Schools to Open October 2

Buckholts schools will begin on Monday October 2 with Harvey Yoe as principal. Yoe is a former Yoe High graduate and a student at State Teachers College in San Marcos. Opening exercises are at 9 AM with an estimated 200 students expected to enroll. Faculty include E L Hinson superintendent Harvey Yee principal and Miss Annie Wenzel. Lower grades teachers are Miss Freida Prinzing Miss Joe Williams Mrs Bertha Goodwin and Mrs W P Elliott.

Mrs. Kittie Mays Dies at 54 in Maysfield

Mrs. Kittie Mays, 54, died Thursday morning at 6 at her home in Maysfield after a year long illness. She was the daughter of the late Rev. J. K. P. Newton, former pastor of the Presbyterian church in Cameron, and Mrs. E. J. Newton of Maysfield. Funeral plans were not set and an obituary will appear in next week's Herald.

Brother Roy Kirkland Rescued By Naval Crew in Pablo Bay

The Vallejo Evening News reports Roy Kirkland was rescued by a U S naval crew after his boat capsized off Mare Island breakwater in San Pablo Bay. A storm tossed the craft, causing leaks and near sinking. Kirkland freed himself from clothes, plugged hull leaks, and was saved by a tugboat. He is the brother of Mrs Albert Schiller.

Suspended Sentence for Murder Surprises Cameron Court

In Cameron District Court a jury spared Jim Nelson prison for killing Sandy Hall by suspending a five year sentence. Nelson stabbed Hall on April 22 after a rent dispute involving a white property owner. Former criminal attorney Jack Lewis defended Nelson while S. M. Burns prosecuted for the state.

Milam County Farmers Receive $156,515 in Checks

A total of $156,515.50 in checks for Milam county farmers who plowed up cotton had been received at the offices of Geo. Banzhaf, county agent, by Thursday noon. In all about $512,000 will be due farmers of the county. There were 2540 contracts signed. Checks are arriving rapidly. farmers will be notified when their checks arrive and may call at Mr. Banzhaf’s office once notified.

New Football Field Is Tribute to Enterprise of Young and Terry

Cameron honors John C. Young of Texas Power & Light and Bob Terry for arranging community support and funding for a new electrically lighted football stadium. Citizens purchased tickets to fund field lighting while the company aided the project, prompting a formal dedicatory ceremony Friday night. Melissa B. Business Women Get Club Rooms in Old School

The Business and Professional Women's Club led by Miss Ann Stallworth has leased the lower floor of the old North College Street school for club rooms. They plan to furnish the space, hold the first meeting on Tuesday evening October 8, cooperate with the American Legion on the top floor, and dedicate efforts to beautifying the grounds and establishing a Milam County Museum with Indian relics and Legion artifacts, with plans for a library and community center activities in Cameron.
