Dr. E. L. Laurence Buried in Thorndale

Funeral services for Dr. E L Laurence prominent Thorndale physician were held Saturday at the Thorndale Christian church with Rev R E Roberts officiating. Burial was in the city cemetery. He came to Thorndale in 1905 and died after ptomaine poisoning at a Taylor sanitarium. Surviving are his wife a daughter Eloise and two sons Reid and Tolbert. He was a member of the Thorndale Christian church and the Masonic lodge.

Barrett joins Central Texas Pioneer Booster Club

John W. Barrett of Yarrellton attends Temple gathering that forms the Central Texas Pioneer Booster Club. About 400 Central Texas residents of 50 years or more were invited. Dr. I. B. Ellis was elected president with Mollie Sherrill as vice president and Lee Knight as secretary. Barrett, born in Alabama, lives near Yarrellton and formerly farmed.

Milam County Ginned Cotton Totals by 1935 Compared to 1932

Cotton report shows 33 348 bales ginned in Milam county from the 1933 crop up to September 16 1935, including half bales counted as round. This compares with 15 883 bales ginned by September 16 1932. Ray T. O Neill special agent.

St Monica’s Parish Celebrates 50 Years With Pontifical Mass Parade

St Monica’s Catholic Church marks its fiftieth anniversary with a Pontifical High Mass at 9:30 a.m. officiated by Bishop Christopher W. Byrne, a 11 a.m. Parade of Progress, noon dinner, 1:30 p.m. speeches by Bishop Byrne and Rep. C. H. Cross, and an afternoon of carnival entertainment and a 6 p.m. supper followed by a Knights of Columbus Hall dance.

Yoemen Open Season With 39–7 Win Over Giddings

The Yoemen opened the 1933 season by dedicating the new Athletic Field with a 39 to 7 victory over Giddings High School. The homestanding team scored early and kept the touchdown parade going while in the game. Giddings added a third quarter score after the Yoemen reserves entered. The Yoemen next play in Navasota then host Hearne Taylor and Caldwell in upcoming games.

Crawford Francis Shows present an exposé titled Georgia Chain Gang showing brutal punishments for petty offenses like vagrancy and riding freight trains. Performed by veterans who endured the system, it features the sweat box and other prison camp devices explained by a lecturer.

The First Baptist church Senior B. Y. P. U. elected officers for the year led by Ida Byrd Mayfield as president. Althea Dickens is first vice president with Curtis Lowe as second vice president and Viola Sustek and Berenice McLerran as group captains. Regina Moseley is secretary, Florence Hobson treasurer, Maurine Leonard chorister, Jewel Hickman assistant chorister, Wenonah Slaughter pianist, and Myra Lee Fanning Bible readers leader.

Yeomen to clash with Hearne on October 13

Cameron fans can see the Yeomen face Hearne at 8 p.m. Friday in the new You High Athletic Field. The night game is expected to draw a season high crowd. Last year Hearne tied 6 6 with Yeomen, and both teams contend for District 20 championship.

Mrs. Kittie B. Mayes Buried at Maysheld

Mrs. Kittie B. Mayes died at her home in Maysfield on September 28 1938 after a months illness. A devout Presbyterian pianist and Sunday School teacher she was born January 14 1870 in Nettleton Mississippi and moved to Cameron then Maysfield with her parents Rev J K P Newton. Her life blessed the community and she was beloved by many.

Relief Employment In City Held Up By Council Hesitation

Cameron merchants lose access to work relief funds as City Council hesitates on signing the application. About $40,000 could be available for local relief projects under the National Recovery Act with one third cash and two thirds in groceries. County Commissioners aim to use funds fully while unemployment rises as residents register daily.

The Cameron Yoemen beat Grindings 39 to 7 in the season opener on the new electrically lighted field. It was the first night game ever played in Cameron and both teams showed good form in the opener.

Legion Brings Shows for Week of October 9

At a Post No 9 meeting arrangements were made for a week long engagement by the Francis Shows. The act will bring rides circus acts and a complete organization. The location will be announced in a subsequent issue. Officials call it the biggest event of their summer activities.

Two Years Given In Theft of Dogs

J. D. Smith was sentenced in district court to two years in the penitentiary for conversion by bailee in the theft of three hunting dogs worth about 3125 owned by Penn Wolf district clerk. He received a two month jail credit. Also mentioned: Miss Laurita Evans and Sonny Pierce spent Sunday in Waco with Miss Kathryn Pierce, a Baylor University student and Sonny’s sister.
