Billie Jean King defeats Bobby Riggs in straight sets 6-4 6-3 6-3 in Houston before a record live television audience. The 29-year-old champion outplays the 55-year-old promoter amid promotional hype and a gender battle in a historic women’s victory.
The match featured Billie Jean King moving Riggs with aggressive net play while Riggs dominated with early service breaks. The crowd saw a gender divide in the nation with women favored 51 to 49. Riggs sparked controversy by bringing promos courtside, drawing backlash.
A dozen or more Copperas Cove students were treated and released at Georgetown hospital during and after the football game with Georgetown. A doctor said no physical injuries were found and the issue was likely emotional hyperventilation.
Plans are finalized for a United Fund kickoff dinner at 7 p.m. Sunday Sept. 30 at the New Salem Home Demonstration Clubhouse in Fair Park. The drive starts October 1 with a goal of $20 375 and will fund UF volunteer workers and final campaign plans.
The Bell County Chapter sponsors a two night Red Cross First Aid Re Training Course for standard first aid instructors in Bell Coryell Falls Milam and Lampasas counties. Sessions run October 1 and 2 from 7 to 10 30 p m at Goodman Gym on the Mary Hardin Baylor College campus. The program prepares instructors for the new Red Cross First Aid and offers expanded training.
The Oakwood Cemetery Association votes to ban artificial flowers after November 1 to prevent fade and windblown debris across graves and hazards for lawn crews. Local residents criticize the decision as unfair and unnecessary while the association cites safety and maintenance concerns.
Dr Elmer Krehbiel of A and M demonstrated a new method of freeze branding at Lampasas. He said the technique is less painful and more humane and the branding area is less prone to infection and screwworm infestation. Dry ice is used and the hair turns white after branding.
The Falls Youth Fair was called the best ever as the Grand Champion steer sold to Halbert Vardiman Hospital for 1991.85 dollars at 2.45 a pound. Total livestock, poultry and rabbits sales reached 30245 surpassing last year’s 18999.33 for a strong auction year.
Cameron Noon Lions Club plans a 50th anniversary banquet at Methodist Fellowship Hall with about 200 attendees. Guest speaker E. B. Tex Mayer of LaGrange, past Lions International director, will address members. The club, chartered Sept 19 1923 with 26 founders, supports scholarships and local services in Milam County.
Texas High Plains farmers face an emerging fertilizer shortage blamed on higher exports and natural gas cuts. Railcar bottlenecks limit shipments, threatening winter pastures and small grain crops. State officials warn the shortage could worsen into spring, risking Texas wheat and higher food prices nationwide.
Farmers fertilizer makers say exports rise this year due to Phase 4 price limits, while U S buyers face higher import costs spurred by crop failures in Russia India Pakistan and parts of Africa. USDA projects a shortfall of one million tons of phosphorus and seven hundred thousand tons of nitrogen.

The meeting is Tuesday October 2 at 7 30 p m in Caldwell High School Voc Ag Building. Attendees can pick up authorization applications and must bring last year’s gross and food sales figures.
Cameron Chamber of Commerce membership drive adds 71 new members across individuals and businesses. Monroe Fuchs led the winning team with 44 new members, Jim Lafferty’s team added 27, and the losers face a future chamber office clean up day.
