A Yeomen fan argues Frank Torno carried the team against McGregor with little credit to the linemen. The writer urges recognizing the line and notes Caldwell game pressures, injuries, reserves, and seating concerns at Cameron’s stadium.
Frank Torno carried Yow High School nearly solo in a dramatic Central Texas game, scoring a late 20 yard run and keeping the Yeomen in contention as McGregor took a single touchdown early. Rettig added a late run, but the Tigers won the clash by a narrow margin.
In a string of upcoming games from Caldwell to Rosebud the team shows little progress. Coach Wood faces a lack of assistants after losing both last year and the Yeomen B Team has no coach, signaling a fragile program and uncertain material for the season.
Funeral services for Mrs. George Rogers were held at Clarkson after she died in Houston. She was formerly Miss Willie Adams of Cameron and a sister of Jim Adams and Ed Adams. The deceased was a Baptist and her husband George Rogers had died years before. Oscar Adams of Waco attended the funeral.
Sgt Edwin Schiller advances to Chief Pharmacist in the United States Army at Camp Crowder Missouri. A Yee High School Cameron graduate and son of FE Schiller, he earned a UT Austin school of Pharmacy degree in June 1941 and entered service in August 1941 after training at San Antonio Camp Grant Fort Smelling. He is 23, previously served in San Antonio Camp Grant Illinois and Minnesota and plans to return to his father's drug store after the war.
The Navy reports 272 officers and men lost aboard a destroyer and a naval transport presumed sunk in the South Pacific. The Destroyer Jarvis and the auxiliary transport Little were lost with all aboard. Japanese action in the Solomons area is blamed for the sinkings.
Kenneth Weems enlisted as a volunteer in the United States Army in September 1640. He rose to sergeant at 10 and is cited as a key figure behind Uncle Sara’s strong army. He was last heard from at Camp Claiborne Louisiana, training a capable unit amid extreme heat. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Marshall Weems of Cameron and has been in service over two years. He is now in England with the 547th Medical Engineers following maneuvers in Louisiana.
H. B. Pressley brought Kiefer pears to Whatley Grocery in Cameron on Saturday. The bumper crop pears weigh 2 pounds each and 17 make a half bushel. Quite the finest such fruit.
The Russians say they have taken the initiative along the entire front and have halted the German advance in Stalingrad. In the past day German losses reach about 13 000 with air attacks reduced as smoke shrouds the city and German dive bombers withdraw. Analysts doubt Hitler can gain a meaningful result from the assault.
Corporal Otto Henry Helpert of Company B 148th Infantry in the 36th Division is stationed at Camp Blanding Florida after enlisting January 1941. Born on a Burlington farm, he attended St Michael's Parochial School and completed two years of high school in Rosebud. he graduated in 1925. He has served at Camp Bowie Brownwood and has taken part in maneuvers in Louisiana Alabama and Georgia. Helpert notes Texas as the best state seen yet. Lieut Raymond Helpert serves in the Chemical Warfare Service in the Panama Canal Zone.
Stanton Dossett former businessman and resident of Shreveport Louisiana has been commissioned a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the United States Navy. Dossett will report to Princeton University on October 5 to begin training for service.
Conrad Kolodejeak volunteered at Fort Sam Houston in October 1940 and earned expert marksman with the Browning automatic rifle. He rose from Private First Class to Corporal by June 1942 and serves as a rifle instructor at Fort Sam Houston with the 23rd Infantry, daughter and son of John and Mrs. Kolodejeak of Cameron.
Cameron schedules a city war bond rally Monday night at the Athletic Field beginning 8:30 PM with business firms asked to close from 7:30 to 6 p.m. A large crowd is expected and a large stands section will be reserved for parents of servicemen.
Mayor Leland Green announced Chamberlain's Dairy will continue to deliver milk for a few days in October to allow government leaders time to decide on a price increase. Chamberlain has not agreed to indefinite deliveries and will wait a few days longer for resolution.
A false radio report spurred motorists to rush to night service stations in Cameron and across Texas to stockpile gasoline. Reports of planned rationing prompted many to fill tanks and containers while traffic congested Houston and Galveston areas. Authorities warn the rumor is untrue and urge calm as phone lines buzz with reactions.
R Willis father of Mrs. James L Coleman died at 10 p.m. Wednesday at 313 Cole Street in Corpus Christi. Funeral services planned there late Thursday or Friday as Mr. and Mrs. Coleman left Cameron early Thursday.
A. F. Mitchell of Corsicana visited Cameron on Wednesday, expressing affection for Milam County and noting his role in supporting Beauford Jester for railroad commissioner. Once county engineer, Mitchell remains active in Texas through broad interests and maintains contact with local and state figures.
Reports from across the country say the 4 H encampment for Negro farm boys will be well attended. Sept 25 26 program features Judge Jeff T Kemp L Van Parkins of the Chamber of Commerce H S Estelle and E B Vans of Prairie View Extension Staff J B White Chairman Draft Board among others. Awards will be given to boys winning in the crops contest.
Lieut. Frank M. Newton long reported missing after a B-24 crash in the Mediterranean is now confirmed a prisoner of war. War Department and Swiss authorities notified. Newton and crew were rescued by a German ship but captured. Family updates include letters from Major Rueter’s wife conveying concern and hope for prisoner exchanges.
Howard Stafford, long time with local theatres, takes a position with the Signal Corps Property Office at Camp Hood. He will oversee films and projectors used in training officers and men at the camp.
