Camp Hood Opens With Modern War Show on September 18
September 18 marks the opening of Camp Hood Texas with a public ceremony attended by Under Secretary of War Robert J Patterson Brigadier General A Bruce and other Army officers. Visitors will witness tank destroyer battalions in training exercises see moving targets and view barracks mess hall chapel and other facilities as ranges and equipment are demonstrated. Seating expansion allows about three thousand more spectators than originally expected. The complex panorama includes anti aircraft ranges moving targets full combat gear and camouflage demonstrations conveying the scale of training and fire power.

Milam County Seaman Jack Pond Among First War Losses
Jack Pond of Milam County died at sea when his merchant ship in the Gulf of Mexico near the Florida coast was torpedoed by a German submarine in early May 1941. Only four crew members survived as the survivors were fired upon from the submarine. Pond and J L Isabell were the two local men who perished. Pond enlisted in the merchant marine and sailed with Sabine Transportation Company on coast wise trips. Memorial services were held at Jon Prairie Baptist church in Inne May with Judge Graham Gillis delivering the address. Two other local boys, Max Sehvinger Jr and Woodrow Ermis, also died in Gulf sea disasters.
