Camp Named Assistant Loan Director

Emory B. Camp, a pioneer in war financing and defense bond selling, was named first assistant to Oxsheer Smith in the Treasury Department. He will cover four counties including Milam and began duties Thursday by compiling a Milam county Third Loan report. Camp, a lawyer and Defense Council chair, leads patriotic efforts boosting the war bond drive. Milam County report telephoned to The Herald at g p m confirms sales progress. County Commissioners approved the 1943 Tax Rolls showing a $135,000 rise over last year.

Milam County farmers eligible for controlled ammunition quotas

Milam County farmers may buy quarterly allowances of .22 rim fire cartridges, .30-30 center fire rifles, and shotgun shells under Certificate No 4, with larger quotas via Certificates 5 or Form PD-860. The program targets predatory control amid previous shortages and is overseen by H L Atkinson, Milam USD War Board chairman.

Marak Picnic and Supper Postponed to October 6

Father Ben Holub of St. Cyril and Methodius church in Marak announced the annual picnic and supper have been moved to Wednesday October 6. The event, originally set for September 22, will begin at 3 p m with the supper to follow and includes an auction featuring three bales of cotton.

Soldier Eugene Knipp Killed in North Africa Area

Eugene Knipp, 28, Cameron native, in the signal corps, died in North Africa on September 7. Announcement came from aunt Mrs. Kathryn K. Robbins. Survived by widow Guayne Shipp and their young daughter. Surviving relatives include his father Will Knipp and sister in Corpus Christi. Knipp graduated in 1932, worked with Schuhmacher Co. in Cameron, and once directed safes in Houston. He enlisted about a year ago. earlier seen in Missouri or a northern center. Local officials recalled him fondly. he was allied with Chas. M. Hicks formerly of the faculty and now county superintendent.

Milam County plans a third War Loan drive with a goal almost unmet. Emory B. Camp urged a full canvass to reach every household as bond support grows in Rockdale Buckholts and Cameron meetings amid tight time and a county quota of about 1.5 to 2 million remaining.

Faulkner Volunteers for Sea Duty with Seabees

W J Faulkner of Cameron joined the Seabees and is now serving at an important Pacific base after enlisting. His wife, Mrs Faulkner, works for Southwestern Bell in Cameron. He sent a coconut parcel from the Pacific and writes home frequently. E L McGuire of Rockdale visited Cameron Monday.

Food Handler School Ends in Cameron

A three week Food Handler's School conducted by the Milam Robertson Health Unit with the State Health Department ended Wednesday night in Cameron. Sixty three managers and employees from local eating and drinking establishments attended classes taught by Roy L. Reinary. Emphasis was on food sanitation glass and dish sterilization personal hygiene and general cleanliness. The program signals stricter enforcement of health laws and aims to raise local food sanitation standards.

Reverend J. R. Ritchie Buried in Grand Saline

Rev. J. R. Ritchie former Buckholts Methodist pastor and father of Mrs. John Meyer died suddenly Saturday after noon September 8 1943 at his daughter's home. He was retired and served as pastor in Buckholts. Surviving four children and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday at Grand Saline the family home.

County LOND total nears four million in war bond drive

War bond sales Friday lagged Thursday but the 3 pm total reached 3,444,760 with 157,300 sold that day. Over 60 percent of the five and a half million quota has been reached, showcasing strong public support in the drive led by Milam county surpassing surrounding counties except McLennan.

Negroes Organize War Loan Drive in Cameron

Paratrooper Pvt Ernest O Glaser See action in Africa and Sicily

Pvt Ernest O Glaser of the Parachute troops has seen combat in the African theatre and Sicily after recovering from a fall at Pope Field. He volunteered February 18 1941 and trained at San Antonio Camp Roberts Fort Benning and Fort Bragg before going overseas. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Rudolph Glaser of Delmena and a Yee High School graduate.

Nine year old HF Green dies in Rockdale home

H F Green aged nine died at his Rockdale home Saturday at 3 00 am after a four month illness. Survived by father Tom Green Cameron mother Ellie M Green Rockdale two sisters Sallie M Green Fay Frances Green Rockdale brother Woodrow Green Rockdale and grandmother Victoria Green Cameron. Funeral services were Sunday at 3 00 pm at Rockdale with interment in Rockdale Cemetery. Green Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. L. W. Sample Buried in Burlington

Funeral services for Mrs. L. W. Sample of Burlington were held at the Burlington Baptist Church with Rev. Nat Bettis officiating. Burial followed in Woodland cemetery under Nichol son Funeral Home. She was born June 13, 1879 in Alabama and resided in Burlington since 1907, survived by her husband, three daughters, four sons, three brothers and four sisters.
