The Cameron development described includes removing the old warehouse, building a three-block mall after the new jail, and paving sidewalks and streets in the nine-block urban area. A courthouse annex and offstreet parking may follow with a companion area near the courthouse.
The old Herald notes F M L discussions have begun with plans that Cameron downtown may rise to uptown status within a year depending on weather and subcontractor availability. Other areas may be studied for a farmers market or exhibition hall outside the renewal zone to replace vacant old buildings. Civic planners, visionaries and landlords hold to progress and expect more development and activity ahead.
The Planning Commission discussed a model mobile home code at a Monday meeting in the Chamber of Commerce office. City councilmen, the superintendent, and owners of mobile home parks joined Mayor Gene Blake, who urged regulation to improve run down areas. The model code aims to regulate placing mobile homes in cities, with support for mobile home parks and concerns about placing homes on vacant lots.
Milam County Commissioners Court in a special meeting Sept 6 approved a resolution to discuss issuing up to 12 million dollars in tax exempt revenue bonds to be reimbursed by Alcoa for pollution control work at its Rockdale Works. The plan follows Texas Clean Air Financing Act and Regional Waste Disposal Act. No tax money would be used. The deal awaits a satisfactory agreement with Alcoa and approvals from Texas and IRS.
The U S Post Office Department launches stamps by mail for busy offices and those who cannot reach a post office. Orders by mail incur a 40 cent fee and are usually delivered within three days. prices cover rolls, sheets, stamp books, and stamped envelopes with checks or money orders.
County Commissioners in a regular session adopt a 1974 budget totaling 164 655 dollars a decline from 1973. The commodities distribution program is cut and replaced by food stamps later this year. Disbursements cover health, extension office, salaries, prisoners, road and bridge, jury, courthouse and jail improvements, and precinct budgets.
Cameron volunteer firemen responded to two home fires and a grass fire Sunday to Monday with no injuries. A mobile home at 322 East 3rd Street burned a chair and carpet after an aquarium shorted a cord. owner Clarence Webber was treated and released. A home belonging to Harbrook Johnson on North Polk suffered heavy damage. A grass fire near Hoyte burned several acres. A Buckholts storeroom fire damaged contents but not the house. The firemen elected officers Jimmy Krenek president Gary Simpkins first vice president Felix Matula second vice president with directors Leslie Bruedigan John David Thompson and Ed Laywell.
Cameron hosts a three day fiesta celebrating Mexican Independence with dancing food and crafts stalls across from the National Guard Armory. An expected crowd of 1500 from central Texas will enjoy nightly dances with Mike Sauseda Ruben Lopez and Is idro Lopez performing. Simon Rangel Sr leads a special Saturday program for the Mexican Patriotic Committee with fiesta queens and patriotic hymns. The event marks Cameron's annual observance since 1926 when land was acquired west of the town for a permanent fair ground and baseball field.
Carroll Wayne Glaser of Rockdale was elected new chairman of the Limestone County Democratic Committee at a called meeting in the district courtroom Monday night. He will fill the unexpired term of C R Law of Cameron who is resigning for health reasons. Law had served since May 2 1970 replacing Max McClaren. McClaren was praised in a resolution for his service.
County commissioners approve demolition of the old McLane building at First and Fannin and its sale. They note remodeling costs for office space are prohibitive and the lot could host a storage annex or parking. A new county jail will be built on part of the site.
Cameron trustees will form a committee of the whole to hire a successor to retiring Superintendent D R Dodson. Dodson urged starting the search now, noting a tight market next year as nearby districts also seek new leaders.
