Milam Arenns notes Rockdale building permits climbed to 2 310 102 in 1977 with August reaching 397 100 and year-to-date surpassing previous records by about 500 000 though the year has two thirds left.
Old timers recall the September 9 10 1921 flood that swept across Milam and Williamson counties with 215 deaths in five counties. Thrall Cameron Taylor reported record rainfall with 36.40 inches in 18 hours and 23.98 inches in 35 hours at Taylor.
Continental Trailways bus driver Erwin Stanford of Lancaster was injured by flying glass when the bus sideswiped a car at Gause and struck a curb. Passenger Fay Oldham of Rockdale was slightly injured. both were treated at Hearne hospital. Car driver Jack Dunn was unhurt.
Buckholts fire truck driver August Marek was injured when the vehicle rolled down an embankment and overturned while responding to a grassfire near Buckholts. He was admitted to Scott and White Hospital in Temple with possible back injuries. DPS Trooper Scott Douglas investigated.
A new group of 31 musicians from Cameron and area forms the Seaton Brass Band to preserve Czech music. The ensemble features DPS troopers, mechanics, and club members, performing polkas waltzes and marches under Ralph Milek. A KCEN TV taping date is being planned after the July picnic.
Cameron plans an Old Timers Rodeo at Cameron Horse Club Arena on Sept 23 and 24. Contestants must be 45 or older for most events with calf roping and breakaway requiring 55 or older. stock by Othel Dockery of Killeen. Other events include bull and bronc riding bulldogging and barrel racing. belt buckles and an All Around Champion buckle awarded. Rodeo starts at 8 p.m. each night with no football conflicts.
A small tornado touched ground from a thunderstorm Friday afternoon on the Earl Hardcastle ranch about two miles southwest of Gause. The ranch home suffered wind and water damage, a shed and power lines were blown down, and Mrs. Hardcastle described the sound as like a train jumped the tracks. Buckholts school trustees set 8 p.m. Monday Sept 12 for meeting in the school library to approve the 1977 tax roll and discuss new and amended district policies and regulations.
