An Italian identified as Ross Mitchell was stopped on the river road west of Cameron driving a stolen 1939 Studebaker coupe and jailed in Milam County awaiting transfer to Houston. He faces three auto theft charges in Houston. Officer Jimmy Mason arrested him. Mitchell says his parents were born in Italy but he is a Texas resident. Mary Lee Mitchell, presumed wife, was jailed with him.
Sheriff Walter White announced Saturday October 31 as the final day to obtain a driving license. A Highway Department representative will be in Cameron to assist motorists, and applications can be obtained and mailed immediately.
Jack Taylor, former Baylor University athlete and air corps instructor stationed in Florida, is home recuperating from an injury after an accident. He has lost hearing in his right ear but hopes to recover soon and plans to return to his army assignment when his condition improves.
Lee Obermiller pharmacist mate in the U S Navy is a Buckholts boy and son of Mr and Mrs W U H Obermiller of Austin. He is stationed in San Diego California and is a Buckholts high school graduate. He is brother of Elmo Obermiller of Cameron and formerly lived at Bryant Station.
Miss Willie Marc Inge and Miss Verda Lee Stecher to report for duty at Fort Sam Houston. Inge, Sharp High School graduate, trained at St. Joseph's Nursing School Fort Worth, 1941 graduate, formerly industrial nurse in Texarkana. Stecher, Yee High School graduate, trained at Providence Hospital School of Nursing Waco, has worked in Tyler. daughter of A R Stewie and in law Miss Matocha.
Coffee will be rationed in America starting November 27 for five weeks based on one pound per person over age 15. Stamps from sugar books will be used for coffee purchases. The measure tightens overall food controls and will sharply limit coffee use.
Vichy government announced Cordell Hull would travel to Moscow as ambassador and Sumner Welkes was slated to become Secretary of State in a reshuffle.
The Alaskan highway was opened for traffic on Thursday allowing travel through the route. Local officials reported clear conditions and expected steady use as motorists began crossing the corridor.

Petty Officer C. E. Crow, 2nd Class, a bombardier aboard the carrier Yorktown wounded in the Battle of Midway, spoke at the local Rotary Club program. The Texan veteran, 39, on 30 days leave, described his service and showed a machine gun bullet from a Japanese Zero.
Reports say Hong Kong and other Chinese ports faced heavy American air assaults from newly used air bases in China with two days of bombing. The strike, part of a wider Allied campaign, included two days of raids with ten Japanese planes shot down and aims toward an expected invasion of Italy. In Egypt Rommel faced Allied pressure and Stalingrad held, as US troops in the Solomons repelled repeated Japanese assaults.

Mrs V L Zavrel of Maysfield was operated on at Newton Memorial Hospital early this week. Surgeons removed 56 stones from her gall bladder. She is reported doing splendidly. Her son praised the hospital service and its homelike arrangement.
Naval Recruiting is sponsored in Milam County by a committee with representatives from all sections. The organization was formed last week and aims to recruit young men for the navy. Officers include Chairman L. Van Perkins Cameron and Vice Chairman Clyde Franklin Rochdale. many local officials and leaders from Cameron Rockdale San Gabriel and surrounding towns serve as members.
J. B. Endy Chief Watertender and Clifford Swift Navy Day speaker were guests at the Rotary Club luncheon in Temple. Swift, hospitalized for a slight operation, could not attend. Chief Eady and C. E. Crow shared wartime experiences including Crow’s Midway service aboard the Yorktown. Eady spoke on a second front and Axis defeat, noting the Navy relies on volunteers and will not accept inductees.
Funeral services were held at 3 45 Thursday afternoon at Thorndale from the home of F W Schwartz. The body was found Wednesday in a barn on his farm. He hanged himself with a rope. He was a World War I veteran. He was gassed and in poor health, deteriorating in recent months. He was about 46. Surviving brothers Otto and Charles Richter of Thorndale.
St and Mrs Frank Perrin announce the birth of an 8 pound baby girl at Newton Memorial Hospital on Monday October 26 1942. Vera Ann is the first granddaughter in the family. the mother is Mary Ann Gree and Lt Frank Perrin, now stationed in Nova Scotia, is the father.
Bill Burns of Marek Burns Funeral Home left Monday for Houston to undergo examination for Navy service. His wife Mrs Burns will remain in Cameron and stay with the funeral home.
Reported on Thursday American Marines and regulars were said trapped on Guadalcanal with sea escape blocked. News described a Japanese naval pressure surrounding the Solomons and Fiji, warning of a possible Bataan-like fate if reinforcements failed.
Mrs Chas Copeland 93 died at her Calvert home Thursday October 22 1942 at 4 30 am Funeral services were held at 3 pm Sunday from the family residence with Green funeral Home of Cameron directing arrangements Interment was in Mt Vernon Cemetery near Calvert Surviving husband Chas Copeland and a number of children
Mr and Mrs Harleigh McGregor and children come back to their Lawrenceville Li home after a visit with his mother Mrs Gussie McGregor. Mrs John Young daughter of Mrs McGregor of Odessa also returns home after visiting here with her mother.
Killeen enters Friday night as a strong District 31A leader with a perfect 5 0 record while Cameron Yoe sits at 3 3. Last year Killeen beat the Yoemen 9 6. Yoe High will play shorthanded missing tackle Darrell Tindall due to a leg injury.
