City urged to fast track payment for highway right of way

Business leaders in Cameron pressed the City Council to finance frontage for highways 190 and 36 now. They urged issuing warrants of up to 50 000 dollars paid from current revenues to avoid bond costs and long election delays, with a plan to retire within five years.

Thorndale Man Recommended for Milam County Draft Board

L. D. Barnes Jr of Thorndale was recommended for appointment to Milam County Draft Board No. 92 to fill a vacancy caused by F. G. Blake. The special committee chaired by Judge Dan Tyson recommended his appointment, contingent on Presidential approval, with current active board members listed. Local Board No. 92 then met to classify registrants and hear appeals.

Second Offense Drunk Driving Brings Three Years Suspended Term

District court heard two second offense drunk driving cases on Monday. J. E. Whitley of Silver City was given three years in prison with the sentence suspended on good behavior. Camp and Camp represented him. Homer Grady Jones of Corsicana awaits trial. Ralph Hubert of Minerva received a three year suspended term. Defendants Wendell Branener and Joe S. Pena pending further trials among five indictments.

Jesus Gonzales six year old son of Mr Henry Gonzales of Cameron was admitted to the Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas on Wednesday Oct 18. The hospital has served Texas crippled children for over 27 years and relies entirely on contributions to provide care and services.

Dr J B Woodall Joins Newton Clinic In Cameron

Dr J B Woodall has arrived in Cameron to practice medicine with Newton Clinic and Hospital after moving from Richland Springs. Born in Huntsville in 1907, he trained at Baylor, completed externship in Dallas and internship in San Antonio, with prior Kerrville clinical work and wartime industrial medical service in Port Arthur. He and Mrs Woodall will relocate with their two children Barbara and J B Jr. to Cameron once housing is secured.

Bright outlook for Cameron water plant bond venture

The Cameron water plant shows eight months net earnings of 5180.91 July through September, supporting bond issuance to buy from Community Public Service Co. City secretary W H Stafford supplied records. If yearly, net would approach 20723.64, with $4390.75 interest paid and 878.15 deducted for surplus. Principal payment due May 1, 1951. purchase price was 300000. The people voted bonds.

Disaster preparedness committees named for Milam County aid

About 150 people attended the Atomic Disaster program in Milam County. A. W. McCullin chaired and spoke on essential bomb attack preparedness. Martin C. Wukasch presented a film and guidance on attack response and Red Cross coordination. Geneva Boss outlined Red Cross roles and disaster work with communities. Milam County Red Cross named chairmen for disaster committees covering clothing shelter food transportation registration publicity survey rescue and evacuation and medical advisory roles. Raymond Perry With Sixth Fleet In Mediterranean Sea

Raymond Perry airman USN son of Mrs Lois Pressley Cameron is a crew member of USS Coral Sea. He volunteered for service in 1947 then re enlisted after a discharge from the Air Corps and has served with Sixth Fleet under Admiral Richard Connolly. His ship docked in Italy and plans to sail for France in a few days.

Lydia Ann Westbrook 97 Dies After Long Texas Life

Funeral services for Lydia Ann Westbrook 97 were held in Liberty after she died Sunday in Dallas while visiting a daughter. A South Carolina native who moved to Texas at age 10, she lived in Milam county most of her life. Surviving are five daughters, four sons, a sister, 31 grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

R. L. Batte, Sr., a widely known Milam County resident, remains critically ill at home after a fall at his business office. He has declined since the injury and his family asks for prayers and welcomes no visitors as friends express concern across the county.
