Alva E. Sanders announces Milam County has been allocated 157600 for 1951 soil conservation measures. Funds will aid farmers in terraces water courses diversions vegetation waterways wells and eroded land control plus lime phosphate winter legumes and pasture improvements. Most practices take effect January 1 1951.
Miss Mary Whatley sister of W T Whatley Sr of Cameron was critically injured when struck by an automobile returning from church in Rogers about 8 PM Sunday. She suffered a fractured leg and head injuries and possible internal damage. Barabas of Cameron drove the car. Highway Patrolmen Johnson and McCrary investigated. no charges filed yet.
Milam County awaits light final picking as Cameron Compress reports 12 000 bales received by season end. Weather and restrictions cut yearlong yield from earlier 16 000 bale estimate as farmers gather at the Court House to discuss 1961 cotton limits with most favoring continued controls.
T. W. Linam of Mayfield visited here recently and discussed visiting friends, sightseeing, and local interests during a brief stay.
A representative from the Austin Social Security office will be in Cameron at the Department of Public Welfare at 1 00 p m Tuesday November 7 to take claims of retired workers dependents and survivors issue social security cards and distribute leaflets detailing the amended act. The 1950 amendments allow higher earnings for retired insured workers up to 50 dollars a month while still receiving benefits and require reporting earnings over this amount to the SSA. No restrictions apply to earnings for beneficiaries over 75 in any employment.
The friends of R. L. Batte Sr report his condition remains critical. He has been homebound for weeks with serious illness. Relatives and friends hope for signs of recovery as all his children gather at his bedside at The Sycamores.
Moore's Southwestern Shows return to Cameron for a one week run starting November 6 on the Boedeker Gin Lot. The enlarged, newly painted carnival features 9 rides 4 shows and various booths sponsored by the local DAV. Kids day Saturday offers reduced ride tickets from 1 to 6 pm for schoolchildren.
Funeral services held in Denton for Sara Neale sister of Mrs. Bill Arthur of Cameron. Neale died from injuries received in a Saturday automobile accident near Devers while returning from A and M College with friends. Survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Neale and three brothers.
Cameron hosts a Community Christmas program with a big parade on December 4 and an expanded Manger Scene in the city park. Plans call for a continuing Home Decorating Contest with a December 15 entry deadline and decorations to stay up until New Year’s.
Two second offense drunk driving cases were before District court on Thursday. Homer Grady Jones of Corsicana and Joe S. Pena of Austin faced trial with indictments by a recent grand jury. Jury members included Lange, Martin, Walker, Hartley, Ku zel, Alford, Woods, Kaatz, Glaser, Wallace, Dark, and Crook. Kendell Grabener of San Angelo also awaits trial on a second offense drunk driving charge.
Mr and Mrs Bobby Reese and their son visited Lockhart over the weekend. Mrs Joe Lemoa mother of Mrs Reese returned to her Lockhart home after a week visit in the Reese home. Mr Reese works on the employment staff at the Cameron Herald.
The Senior Class at Yoe High under Supt W T Hames and sponsors hosted hundreds of exes for a 1945 Homecoming after the war. Luncheon, a business meeting, and officer elections set the stage for future years with Dr Leland Denson elected president for 1946 and successors named in subsequent Homecomings.
Ten men from Milam County passed induction exams out of 23 who left Cameron for Dallas on October 24. All 23 passed physicals but 13 failed the IQ test, a notably high rejection rate. 65 percent had passed exams prior to this call. Roy Bowen 17 son of Mr and Mrs Buddy Corbin suffered serious injuries after falling from a horse during a race with Cotton Noey near Cameron. He sustained facial bruises and lacerations and remained in serious condition on Tuesday morning.
Statewide search continues for a green Cadillac after a sniper fired from a rear window at Rockdale Constable Ed Sexton late Monday night. Sexton chased the speeding car on Highway 79 toward Thorndale. bullet struck the top of his patrol car and the license plate appeared to be turned up to conceal numbers.
Building permits in Cameron for October totaled 11275.00, announced by City secretary W. H. Stafford. After a boom six months, October shows a sharp dip with major permits for two new houses by Frank Perrin and Roy Calloway and little mercantile activity. Yearly total stands at 208152, expected near 250000 by year end.
The seventeenth annual Texas Farm Bureau Federation convention will be held in Mineral Wells November 2021 22 with speakers including U S Senator Tom Connally Congressman Albert Gore and other national figures. More than a thousand farm and ranch members from 200 Texas counties are expected with grassroots delegates to approve resolutions guiding next year’s policies. The event opens November 20 with hearings and meetings and ends with a Wednesday business session concluding the three day program.
The First Presbyterian Church circles met on Monday Wednesday and Friday to study work in the home mission field. Mrs W G Gillis led devotions and talks urged aid for Indians Mountain People Chinese Czech and Mexican groups within the Southern Presbyterian Church. A Friday social and kitchen shower followed. Mrs J H Sapp received a going away gift as she heads to Houston for the winter.
Two Puerto Rican revolutionists opened fire on Blair House doorstep as President Truman slept. One gunman died, the other wounded. Secret Service man killed and two guards injured. Torresola identified, Collado wounded. incident eclipsed by Arlington ceremony.
The American Legion Edwin Hardy Post No 9 will hold its Armistice Day Dinner at Simon George Hall at 12 noon on November 11 with Senator Jep S Fuller of Beaumont as guest speaker on Qualities of Americanism. Tickets cost 1.25, sale locations listed. a 9 PM dance at the Hall features Happy Dan and His Boys at 1 per couple.
