Truck crash spills bleach on Texas highway near Somerville

A truck tractor rig overturned 1.3 miles south of Somerville on State Highway 36 Sunday. The impact shattered the van top, bleached liquid spilled along the roadway, and the Santa Fe underpass abutment was struck, blocking traffic for hours.

Alcoa Opens Hearing on Texas Surface Mining Permit

The Railroad Commission held the first hearing at 10:30 a.m. on November 23 in Rockdale for Alcoa’s Milam County lignite operation at Sandow six miles southwest of Rockdale. The hearing covers Alcoa’s plan under the Texas Surface Mining and Reclamation Act to continue lignite extraction over about 770 acres to fuel boilers for aluminum smelting.

Lone Star Gas Files for rate increase to secure an 8 percent return. Local manager Grady Allen cites 4.62 percent 1975 return on Cameron distribution, $38 042 needed to cover revenue deficiency, and rising gas costs from 18 cents to $1.03 per thousand cubic feet since 1971. Residential bills could rise about $1.87 monthly for 8 MCF use.

Postmaster Announces Cameron Mail Delivery Schedule Changes

Cameron postmaster Henry Litzman announces schedule and assignment changes at the Cameron post office. Mail receipts from Temple Sectional Center will shift about 30 minutes later, with box section mail expected by 8 a.m. Carriers will report 30 minutes later, Mullinax named rural route 3 carrier, Michalka to route 2, and three sub rural carriers to be appointed after civil service exams.

Doomwatch warning on land and sea degradation worldwide

UN environment head Dr Mostafa Tolba warned that mismanagement of land and seas could cause costly environmental damage within a decade. He flagged chemicals, seas pollution, soil erosion and the ozone layer, urging stringent global safety standards and swift action. He cited the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf as failing ecosystems and warned desertification threatens developing lands.
