City urges universal sewer use and strict ordinance enforcement to boost public health. Civic improvement plans push for brighter lighting, street paving and closer city merger. Christmas fund drives for the poor run through the Herald with a plea for donations. Cameron Fire Department calls for a new Seagrave LaFrance fire engine and upgraded equipment.
A tragedy in Meeks Bell Falls area ends with Miss Hildreth Schulte and Carl Pretter dead after a lover s quarrel and self inflicted gunfire. In Cameron J D Hefley announces construction of six modern brick buildings with two already let, signaling a new business era for the city.
Sheriff Drue S. Rogers Deputy N O Kennedy and George Gamble constable at Sharp led two raids resulting in five arrests on charges of transporting and manufacturing liquor. Chas Kolb and P M Wissinger faced Cameron Justice Court on transporting liquor. A Briary raid netted three Mexicans Augustine Alvardo Magil and Mercid Hernandez with a still and 50 gallons mash. their cases go before the Cameron grand jury on November 12.
Weather update for East Texas Cameron area. Tonight unsettled in the west and fair in the east. Friday turns colder in the east with rain and colder in the west. Panhandle may see rain or snow.
All highways are open with fair to good conditions from Waco to Rosebud and Burlington. From Travis to Lott some grading is done with rough sections. In Lott and one mile beyond, construction limits speed to about 5 miles per hour. Good gravel resumes near Chilton and continues into Waco with four miles of slow going on new roadway. Tem ple offers a quicker route.
Mrs Daisy Leake of Temple was a guest of Mrs S Carlton this week in a social visit noted in local society chatter.
Miss Eleanor Phillips of Rockdale spent Friday and Saturday as a guest of Miss Trene Cheeves, sharing a social weekend in the area.
The city plans opening bids on over thirty blocks of paving using Uvalde Rock Asphalt and 8 inch gravel, with about 50 000 yards of paving. Bids for a 100 000 dollar road and bridge project will follow on November 4. A sewer disposal plant and other city works are in the bidding queue. Havine will return from San Francisco after attending the American Legion meeting.
Fourteen Cameron volunteers will drive to Waco for Cotton Palace hose racing on Monday October 29. Prizes start at $300 as teams from across Texas compete on an all firemen day with Capt. Lindres leading the Cameron squad and a full roster of riders and mascots taking part.
Loss estimated at about 4000 dollars occurred Wednesday night near Cameron when the T. H. Graves farm bin barn and its contents burned. The barn held 1600 bushels of corn and 250 bales of hay. The fire, said to have started on the second floor, was covered by insurance. a new barn will be built.
Sheriff's department probes a Wednesday burglary at a residence near Tracy. An elderly man known as Mr. Wilson reports theft of bed clothing and mattresses from the home. Investigators pursue leads and aim to resolve the case promptly.
A. F P Mitchell commander of the American Legion Post in Cameron will return to Cameron Thursday. Mrs J M Ralston recently in Galveston and Houston for medical care came home Sunday but will return for further treatment. She will leave Friday with Mr Ralston and Mrs Paul Brown and their son visiting the Ralston home this week.
Deputy Kennedy reports two African American men shot during a gambling dispute. Dick Pattison was wounded in the heel, another man in the shoulder, and a third unnamed Negro in critical condition. John Bailey and Hilman Ayers were arrested and later released. The shooting occurred during a nighttime confrontation. Patterson fled while being treated at a hospital.
The Ed Beard murder case in Milam County nears verdict after four days of testimony in Thorndale. Eyewitness Mrs. Hyde described Beard shooting Robert Caffey at close range in the Sunday morning incident at the Hyde home. The defense and state rested late Thursday with Judge Watson delivering the charge to the jury before closing arguments.
