City Assures Eighth Street paving program at council meeting

A council meeting secured an eight block East Eighth Street paving plan in two stages with resident participation. Mayor Wilson said a two coat penetration pavement would replace torn paving from Washington to Jackson after curb installation. Council invited residents to discuss the project and commitments were urged by Councilman Wells. Completion would add eight blocks citywide, with work starting after curb levels are set early next year.

Lions Club Broom and Mop Sale Planned

Cameron Lions Club runs its annual Broom and Mop sale on Tuesday November 2 with Albert McCullen Jr directing. Members will sell at County Courthouse and Yee High Gym polling places and door to door 5 to 9 p m. Proceeds benefit the Crippled Children Summer Camp and other services. Articles come from a non profit that trains and employs the blind.

Eaton Guilty Twice in Slaying, Death Sentence Given

Gerald Eaton, 29, of Buckholts is found guilty in a second trial in Sumpter County Alabama, and sentenced to die in the electric chair on January 25. The case involves Leonard Culpepper, 57, of Cuba Alabama, and four ex carnival workers arrested after a five state crime spree, with Lokos Coon Edwards also facing death sentences previously affirmed.

Cameron Hotel echoes its auditorium past and 1899 roots

Historic Cameron Hotel once hosted minstrel shows and Shakespeare in its early auditorium days. The 1899 cornerstone for the Young Men's Business League marks its civic roots, with later upper floors added in 1911 and roles as a dining venue, barber shop, and hotel before closing in 1963.

McLerran to Fill Post for Year at Yee High School

Cameron School District board named Harrison McLerran acting principal for the remainder of the 1965-66 year. Supt. D. R. Dodson announced other actions including a quit claim deed to the heirs of Tom Marak, raises for two secretaries, Title I funds review, installation of science lab equipment, a soft drink machine for Yee Gym, approval of the 1965 tax roll, and monthly bill payments.

Milam County Farm Bureau Plans Board and Resolution Vote

The Milam County Farm Bureau convention will meet at 7:30 p m Thursday to vote on resolutions for the state convention and elect ten board members. John A Smith chairs the resolutions committee with Calvin Cobb Vaughn Jensen Henry W Abel and H M Yager set to serve. Twelve directors will be elected to the 22 member board and officers named from the new board after the election.

T&C Homes Opens Cameron Office in Town and Country

Carter Collins opens Town and Country Homes in Cameron with a new office at 210 East 1st. He will custom design homes and plans some speculative builds after year’s start. A Cameron native, he has worked with firms in Washington DC and Dallas. he lives with his wife Ann and their 3 year old son at 1000 East 19th Street.

Judge Sets Dates For Murder Trials At Arraignment

Judge William C. Wallace fixed trial dates for three men indicted for murder with malice and assault with intent to murder with malice. Hipolito Gonzales December 14, Phillip Camacho March 14 1966, Theodore Gonzales February 8 1966. They are charged in the death of Simon Amaroz and assault of Pedro Degallado Gonzales at the La Rumba tavern in Cameron on August 22. Camacho and Theodore Gonzales posted $10,000 bonds. Hipolito Gonzales is jailed in Milam County awaiting bond.

Absentee Votes Reported for November 2 Election

County clerk Wayne Weiser said no absentee ballots had been cast yet for the November 2 election on ten constitutional amendments. Absentee voting is available at the courthouse through October 29 in the special election, with a predicted light turnout in Milam County.

Buckholts to Host Turnersville in Homecoming Clash

Buckholts hosts Turnersville for Homecoming on Saturday October 23 with a bonfire pep rally Friday and a homecoming supper. Sweetheart candidates include Janice James and Sandra Gresak. Cameron School Board Commends Equalization Board Members

The Cameron School Board unanimously approved a resolution praising six men from the Cameron Independent School District for service on the District equalization board. Few Takers Here for Questioned Poll Tax

Milam County offers poll taxes at the courthouse but few buyers due to federal legal questions. Tax assessor Walter White recommends waiting on a federal decision on legality for next year. If illegal, refunds cannot be issued. Poll taxes may be bought until January 31, 1966.

The Cameron Knights of Columbus Council 2338 recognized 25 year members at a Thursday night meeting. Honorees include J. C. Andres Willie Andere Edmond Boedeker Emil Boedeker Paul Dillon Rev. J. T. Bloodmobile program costs quoted to residents
