Cameron area honors Bryan district engineers and county highway staff at the annual Chamber of Commerce Highway Barbecue in the city park. If bad weather, event moves to Methodist fellowship hall. attendees include Cameron officials and county highway leaders.
Cameron volunteers battled a 2:30 a.m. blaze at J. D. Smalley home on North Travis causing about 2000 in damages before a second flare at 7 a.m. led to efforts by a second crew. Fire Marshal John Andres cited electrical wiring as a possible origin while residents were away. Grace Kohutex's rental also caught fire, but quick response prevented injury to two sleeping children.
The Cameron Herald reflects on former staffers Robert Juann and James Holls now at Sam Houston State College and Corpus Christi Caller Times. Lois Sapp aids her husband in business as the paper notes its growing alumni impact and its obligation to educate and inform readers during National Newspaper Week.
The Trade and Development Committee of the Chamber of Commerce will sponsor an Employee of the Month program in Cameron this month to boost pride in the occupation. A monthly winner will be awarded and recognized at the annual banquet, with managers nominating staff and judges visiting businesses in strict confidence.
Judge William C. Wallace sets arraignment for Hipolito Gonzales of Troy Phil Lip Camacho of Waxahachie and Theodore Gonzales of Troy on murder and assault charges stemming from a Milam County grand jury action last Thursday. CountyAttorney John Hender continues proceedings.
B F Bonds died at his Cameron home after a heart attack. Funeral services were held at Marek Burns Funeral Home with Rev Richard Freeman officiating. Burial was in Gax Hill Cemetery. Born April 22 1887 in Salty he lived in Cameron since 1914. He belonged to San Andres Lodge 10 Little River Chapter Council Knights Templar and Karem Shrine in Waco. Survived by his wife and numerous relatives.
Chamber of Commerce directors report ongoing civic improvement, tourism, trade development and industrial planning. A Hospitality Clinic will be held in Cameron November 16 under Howard Rosser of the East Texas Chamber of Commerce Tour smW Department. The membership drive added 43 new members and about $1,400 to the annual budget with $342 collected that day. Plans include park beautification with a landscape architect, designation of $100 annually from the Helley estate, and Christmas decorations by the Trade Development Committee. Coy Stanphill works on an industrial brochure with Texas Power & Light aiding on the cover. The group seeks to hold Cameron football playoffs pending school board approval for using Cameron facilities.
Fire Prevention winners were named at Ada Henderson Yoe High and St. Anthony schools. Multiple categories honored first to third places with themes by Sara Arthur Aieth Zaw teste and others. The Chamber of Commerce Fire Prevention Committee sponsored judges and prizes.
A 15 year old Cameron youth was declared a juvenile delinquent and committed to the Texas Youth Council. He was immediately transferred to Gatesville State School for Boys after appearing in juvenile court for investigation of three Cameron business break ins. Break ins were reported at Mondrick's Minimax Milam Feeders Supply and Grimes Humble Warehouse.
Jay Naman of Waco state Farmers Union president and Alva Sanders ASCS office manager discussed the new four year Federal Farm Program at the Milam County Farmers Union dinner and meeting at Simon George Hall Saturday. Charles Hensley was re elected president. Ervin Pelzel elected vice president. Mrs Charles Hensley reelected secretary treasurer. Board of Directors for the coming year include Mr. and Mrs. Jess Weber, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Moran, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Ford, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Litzman, Mrs. Paul Dillon, Mr. and Mrs. J L Devere, Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Doss, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Ford, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Willy, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Daskocil, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Olbrich, and Mr. Arthur Theis.
Miss Patsy Stephens and Dean Stiles head up Milam County 4-H Achievement Program in Cameron. The ceremony featured forty five awards across Agriculture Beef Clothing and more plus a special plaque for Milam County Agent J D Moore and recognition for long time leaders. Entertainment included skits by Gause Thorndale and Marak 4-H clubs with Czech dancing.
Primera Iglesia Bautista church led by Rev. R. R. Martinez won Category I of the Church Development Program sponsored by the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Home Mission Board. Dr. Dallas P. Lee will commend the church during Sunday service and Rev. Martinez will be honored at the Texas General Convention next month. A fellowship dinner will follow the service.
Walter W. Raymond 68 died of a heart attack at his Sacramento home on Saturday October 9. Funeral services were held in Sacramento. A retired warrant officer and native of Maysfield he joined the service in 1924 and lived in California since then. Surviving are his wife Mrs Walter V. Raymond of Sacramento and four brothers W H Raymond of Houston Paul A Raymond of Kingman T G Raymond and A L Raymond of Cameron.
Cameron school trustees gather at 7 30 p m Thursday in the superintendent's office at Ben Milam School to view ongoing improvements including a new science lab and gymnasium floor work with equipment arriving for installation.
