Grand Jury Hears Nine Charges In Milam County

Milam County Courthouse hosts a district grand jury session with about nine charges heard and to be reported out later Wednesday. County District Attorney John B. Henderson Jr. presented the cases.

Court Affirms 2 Death Sentences and Grants New Trial

Gerald Eaton 29 of Buckholts, among four men sentenced to die in March 1964 for killing an Alabama man, has been granted a new trial. The Alabama Supreme Court referred Eaton’s case back for trial and affirmed the death penalty for two other men.

Fire Prevention Week observed by Cameron schools

Cameron participates in National Fire Prevention Week with student memes posters and jingles. The Chamber of Commerce Fire Prevention Committee with Bill Arthur as chair provides judges ribbons and prizes. Observance runs Oct 3 to Oct 9. Sheriff Black reports multiple capital cases and trials set for Oct 12 and Nov 26 1965 involving condemned prisoners in Alabama and a prior 1963 Cuba incident.

Construction on New City Library To Begin Friday

State Library officials in Austin approved the Cameron Library contract last Friday and construction is set to start Friday. Coffield Construction Co. of Rockdale will move in equipment Friday after the $65,609 project received state and federal matching funds. The expanded 4,000 square foot building will hold about 28,000 volumes and include central heating and air conditioning on Fast Courthouse Street in Cameron.

Five Men Charged With Cattle Theft in Milam County

Milam County grand jury case pending as five men face cattle theft charges in Milam District Court. Names include Sam Jones and Odell Moore of Gause Ira Ross and Charles Westbrook of Hearne and Charlie Billy Joe Trotter of Calvert. All were arrested after alleged thefts in Milam Robertson and Falls counties. Sheriff Carl Black notes thefts have occurred here for about six months.

Four Wrecks In Three Days Reported By Police Chief

Police Chief Elvin Hoskins reported four wrecks over a three day period causing extensive vehicle damage and minor injuries. Tuesday a northbound pickup and a westbound car collided at Norui Crockett and W second streets. Cameron resident Mrs Currie Marak Gurecky failed to yield to a Ford pickup driven by Roland Carl Castenson of Bryan. Minor damage noted to the pickup and about 500 to the car. Also Monday a 1962 Cadillac driven by Mayor Bassel Wilson collided with Albert Burnett at 14th and Jackson Streets with no injuries and damages between 100 and 150 dollars on each car. Monday afternoon two vehicles collided at N Houston and 4th Streets when Ollie Leonard White of Cameron turned improperly. Willis Jeep driven by Frank Karnowski of Temple collided, car damaged about 100 dollars and the jeep 50. White cited for improper left turn. Sunday at 6:45 p.m. two vehicles head-on at State and Crockett. Luther McDonald turned left onto Crockett colliding with Betty Martin Davis of Lubbock, with Davis passenger Robert Davis suffering minor facial injuries and bruises.

Farmers Union Dinner Convention in Cameron Milam County

Milam County Farmers Union annual dinner and convention set for 7 p.m. Saturday October 9 at Simon George Hall Cameron. State President Jay Naman of Waco and local ASCS manager Alva Sanders will discuss the new four year Federal Farm Program. After barbecue and chicken dinner, members will review policies and adopt resolutions for the State Convention in Abilene November 4 to 6. Dinner tickets are $1 from any officer or director.
