Cameron Public School Board Extends Three Year Contracts

The Cameron board approved three year contracts for six administrators and teachers including Wiley Loughmiller coaches Leo Jackson and Dick Young Francis Cox S. M. Layfield and with W T Hanes superintendent whose contract runs to 1960. The meeting also approved annual tax rolls delinquent notices and the delinquent tax certificate plan with a $1 issuance fee to be added to the maintenance fund.

Ministerial Alliance backs CROP drive with milk aid plan

The Ministerial Alliance voted to support the Christian Rural Overseas Program again. For each dollar donated, the government will ship twenty dollars worth of milk products to afflicted peoples overseas. Youth will raise funds on October 30 during Trick or Treat visits.

Milk and fruit prices rise in Cameron shops

Retail milk prices in Cameron rose by one cent per quart this week with all stores except one noting the hike. Cream and all milk types are affected while butter prices stay steady. Canned fruits also show increases though fresh fruit remains unchanged.

Youth narrowly escapes injury after stepping before pickup

William E. Mowdy son of Mr and Mrs Mowdy Cameron received only minor injuries when he stepped in front of a slowly moving pickup near Ada Henderson elementary school yard. City marshal Joe Richter said the boy was lucky. He was taken to St Edwards Hospital for X rays and examinations to confirm the injury was only a skinned heel.

Yoe High Winners Named in Fire Prevention Poster Theme Contest

S M Layfield announces winners of the Poster and Theme Contests tied to Fire Prevention Week at Yoe High School. Grover McCullin wins Theme Contest, Robbie Price is runner up. third place recipients include Ann Wimberly, Nancy Grabein, and Ann Harper. Poster contest first goes to Myrna Gale Jackson with Joyce Edmonds second. Buddy Thompson, Nancy Matyastik, and Wilma Baldridge take third. Local Fire Department officials will present awards at a school assembly Thursday.

Grand Jury Convenes In Milam County On October Fifteenth

Milam County's grand jury will convene in the courthouse on Friday October 15 with Judge O D Graham presiding. County Attorney Jim Miller will present several proposed indictments and urges any citizen with matters for the jury to attend and submit grievances. Jurors will be listed later.

Milam Countians Hold On To Minerals In Oil Boom

Milam County sees Texas Gulf Sulphur Company expanding oil work between Rockdale and Milano as it prepares an 8 000 foot well. Previous wells were shallow about 1300 feet yielding around 30 barrels daily. Leases rise across the county and landowners begin to reserve mineral rights while awaiting results from the deep well.

Local Poultry and Egg Prices Fall Amid Overproduction

Local dealers report eggs down to 18 30 cents per dozen and poultry prices slipping from 28 to 12 cents per pound with broilers at 21 cents. Beef and pork also dip while turkey production rises 10 percent. farmers face soil nutrient shortages and a government subsidy covers 80 percent of soil saver costs to preserve land.

C L Dick Blackmon lifelong Cameron resident died October 12 in Lisbon Veterans Administration Hospital Dallas after an extended illness. Funeral services were held October 13 at 3 p m from Marek Burns Funeral Chapel with Rev Aubrey Russell officiating. Survivors include wife two daughters four brothers one sister five granddaughters and one grandson. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery.

At a W. T. Hanes led meeting the School Board discussed cement projections safety islands and radius points in front of Ben Milam Elementary. Councilman Robert Weems urged removal to gravel and finish the street while board members noted light pole concerns and a city council request to reconsider.

Traffic Tickets Offenders Due In Court Now

City Attorney Roy Baskin announced petitions will be filed to bring traffic ticket offenders to court next week. About 400 tickets remain unpaid while 86 are held by three individuals, led by County Judge Charles C. Smith Jr. with 45. Several letters have been mailed after three day leniency periods, with prior notice to defendants before suit.

Baskin-Triggs Case Tried In Court Monday

Julian P Baskin sues Claude Triggs cotton buyer in district court alleging conversion of Baskins property. He claims Triggs purchased cotton from Baskins tenant C F Gilbert, paid Gilbert, and ignored Baskins one fourth ownership lien. Baskin seeks 1270 dollars plus six percent interest from June 21 1954. Streets and school clash over Ben Milam safety zone

The Cameron City Council and Cameron School Board dispute a safety zone for parked cars in front of Ben Milam school. Robert Weems heads the street committee and must decide the 10th street issue with backing from the council, or another member is chosen.
