A late summer influx of crickets fills walls and streets then vanishes with cold weather. Temperatures in the forties trigger mass death as brittle legs snap and bodies crumble on sidewalks. They return yearly as a nuisance and odd natural phenomenon across homes and yards.
The text suggests John H. Van Vleck, aged 78 and a Nobel Prize co-winner in 1977 for electronic structure research, might explain phenomena behind crickets appearing or disappearing. It hints Harvard physicists could illuminate why crickets emerge and vanish.
County Judge C. B. Harden urged commissioners to proceed with reevaluation of county properties which could add up to 20 million dollars to the tax rolls. Wheels for Edwin Marek Jr. has accounts in Citizens National Bank and First National Bank of Cameron with Lois Sapp as director. A bake sale planned October 21 in Cameron supports the fund and other events are planned to help Marek, paralyzed in 1974, complete his education and seek employment.
Trustees discussed unemployment insurance costs for district employees at about 9000 dollars yearly under a new Texas law. Superintendent Dulin proposed joining TASB for 45 dollars per employee annually, avoiding high legal fees, while noting a loophole if workers quit without good cause. The board tabled action to study details and potential TASB membership.
The city planning commission recommended the city council reconsider a pending annexation plan and warned against outside control. A joint meeting set for Oct 17 will discuss annexation, new city hall and fire station, with house to house surveys underway in Boedeker Addition amid opposing resident groups.
The Cameron Area Chamber of Commerce commends the Cameron Volunteer Ambulance Service for its first year of operation. Chamber president LaVert McKinney states the manager directors and members appreciate their accomplishments and that the community is well served and supported 100 percent.
A $10 000 goal is set for Cameron United Way drive from Oct 24 to Nov 4 led by chairman L W Turner. Contributions from businesses and individuals are sought without a house to house visit. Funds support local groups including the Salvation Army Red Cross Day Care Center Little League Girl Scouts and more.
