Milam-Areans Cut Tax Rate Amid Valuation Boost
Milam-Areans lowered the tax rate by 15 cents to 85 cents per $100 valuation based on 80 percent valuations. Despite the cut the city will not see lower taxes because independent evaluation boosted total taxable property in the city by about 45 percent. Belton elementary schools switch to conferences replacing report cards with each student’s meeting time set after the first six weeks. Three early-dismissal days are planned for conference sessions. A 54-year-old Caldwell man was killed Saturday night when struck by a truck while crossing Highway 36 south of the city limits at 8 15 p m. Lampasas volunteers set a new record for fire calls, with 249 responses so far this year, approaching the 1974 record of 341.

Milam County Banks Show $7 Million Deposit Gain
Milam County banks reported a year end rise of 7,347,712. Citizens National Bank in Cameron led with the largest gain, while First National in Cameron topped over 2 million. Rockdale State Bank and Buckholts State each crossed the 1 million mark with notable growth in deposits.

Rogers Industrial Plant Nearing Completion Date
Rogers city council approved annexation of a 20.54 acre plant site west of city limits for the Newton-Nervc Corporation’s 23100 square foot facility which will produce tables and institutional furniture and may move Temple operations to Rogers. The city also annexed a 100 foot strip between the plant and current limits. Mrs Stefka noted local residents work at the Temple plant. The Cameron Volunteer Ambulance Service marks its first anniversary with a barbecue dinner Monday at 7 p.m.
