Hearne approves brush burning permit and city charges

Milam-Areans McGregor gains a Texas Air Control permit allowing quarterly brush burns with no other refuse accepted. The city will charge for haulage. Rosebud police chief Rodney Blasingame resigns citing long hours low pay and benefits. Burleson County Hospital District votes approve 19 and 42 margins. district creation 1221 to 1202. bonds for a new hospital fail 1188 to 1146. Rockdale wins 250000 federal CDAC grant for street paving sewer drainage housing rehab and admin.

Six Guilty Pleas in District Court With Probation

Six cases disposed in District Court on Sept. 23. Arnold Mack Erwin and Celestino Sanchez pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated subsequent offense and were given three year sentences with probation and $150 fines. Carolyn Hibbler received a three year prison term for possession of a controlled substance by forgery and placed on supervised probation. Sandra Kay Alcorn Tindle pled guilty to possession of a forged instrument with a two year probation. Louis Wardlaw pleaded guilty to burglary and received a two year prison term with $65 restitution and probation. All six defendants pay $15 monthly probation fees.

New Sewer Project Enters Final Stage

Construction work is set to begin by October 10 on the remaining sewer project in Alabama Town to complete the new system for the area.

No Injuries Reported In Bus Mishap

A school bus traveling west on Eighth collided at Eighth and Polk with a car driven by Leon Howard of Cameron. The bus had Lloyd Rider at the wheel with several students aboard. Howard was ticketed for failing to stop at the stop sign. The bus left the scene after a buckled fender was removed. the car suffered extensive front end damage.

Fire Ant Bait Distribution Planned in Milam County

Fire ant bait will be distributed to Milam County landowners Monday October 3 and Monday October 10 from 1 a.m. to 2 p.m. by Texas Department of Agriculture personnel at the Precinct 2 county barn on Highway 77 North in Cameron. There are no charges for the Mirex. Landowners will sign for the material and certify acreage to be treated. October is an excellent time to treat fire ants as they store food for winter months.

Buckholts Trustees OK 1977 Tax Roll and Sewer Project

Trustees approve the 1977 tax roll showing district valuations of 4.7 million dollars with a 1.60 dollar tax rate per 100 based on 40 percent of market value. The board accepted a donated electric scoreboard to be installed, dependent on sewer work by the Community Development Agency, replacing outhouses and septic tanks as part of a federal program begun in 1975.

New Wells Reported In County Near Milano Oil Boom

Milan County reports rising drilling activity with several new wells hitting pay. Martin Oil & Gas brought in a 5000 foot oil well on the Mary Morgan tract two miles east of Milano off Highway 79 with first day flow 500 to 700 barrels. Houston Petroleum reports multiple discoveries near Milano including a 3200 foot Nachitech formation well and a Wilcox oil and Path gas show. J. D. Peeples and Rice Dennis wells near Milano continue producing, while B&B Drilling Co. & Associates stake Haddox unit. Caddo Oil Co. of Louisiana buys more than 20 000 acres from H. H. Coffield.

Grassfire Burns Acres Near Adams St Crossing

Volunteers battled a large grassfire along the railroad right of way near Adams St crossing in Cameron, consuming pasture and brush. Firemen first arrived at 2 p.m. fought two hours, then returned at 6 p.m. Later, at 11:45 p.m., crews were sent to a small frame house at Rusk and Henderson owned by Augustine Bailey, reportedly engulfed on arrival with the cause undetermined.
