The town pushes compulsory paving for the business district despite a failed voluntary petition. Officials hope residents will back the project once paving starts and a $100,000 road bond issue funds the Ad Hall McCown bridge road. Local editorials urge public support for civic betterment amid rains and upcoming events.
Thursday forecast calls for extended trips not advised at 11:00 a m. Mud chains recommended. Houston via Hearne shows rough sections around Hempstead. San Antonio via Rogers Granger and Taylor fair to good. Waco via Rosebud rough and heavy. Waco via Temple fair to good. LaGrange via Giddings fair. Caldwell via Milano good to Milano balance fair. The Cameron city council passed a sweeping dairy sanitation ordinance with annual tubercular tests for herds and strict enforcement led by Dr. G E Sutton. Operators must obtain licenses now or no milk is delivered. The council also approves funding and site planning for a new Mexican school building, with a one teacher program expected to start for about 20 pupils as population grows.
Congregation approves erecting a modern church and begins fundraising with at least 8500 dollars to be raised cash before year end. Finance committee named and ground breaking planned for 1924 as plans proceed and existing funds plus Yee bequest aid the start.
Zores Criswell, son of D. R. Criswell, was killed Wednesday night near Buckholts when a car overturned on the Buckholt Rogers road. He was engaged in business at Buckholts and was a brother of Flores Criswell, Buckholts State Bank cashier. Funeral held there Thursday. County mourns the bereaved family.
Col Ike Looney 69, longtime Milam county resident and Texas House member, died at his Ben Arnold farm home after weeks of illness from heart infection and heart failure. He was a Baptist, Mason, Democrat, and noted for public service and advocacy for the commonwealth. The obituary notes his lifelong political involvement and devotion to Texas history and tradition.
Dr. C. F. Everette rents the two story Henderson property near the Sap depot to operate a rooming house. He will provide meals and light housekeeping apartments, drawing on his local reputation and friends who welcome the venture.
East Texas Cameron reports unsettled conditions tonight and Friday with likely local rains. Rivers are rising in Trinity and Canadian basins as heavy statewide rain totals appear, including Paris 2.40, Palestine 1.10, Cameron 0.88 and Dallas 0.389 inches. Temperatures yesterday ranged from 66 in Amarillo to 94 in Lampasas.

An unidentified Mexican assailant attacked Constable Frank Boggan at Milano railroad station as a second Mexican stabbed another man. I. McIlvian of Cleveland, Texas, grabbed the officer’s pistol after it hit the floor and shot the attacker three times, saving Boggan. Both Mexicans are reported in critical condition. Mellvain is being treated in Cameron.
R. B. Parsons, former Yor High Principal, reports his new address at Baylor College Belton where he holds a chair. He asks the Herald send to him there and notes four Cameron girls among Baylor students Olive Henderson Louise Du Bois Mabel Jeter and Mattie Everette and others may be enrolled.
The Jefferson Memorial Foundation starts a nationwide drive to buy Monticello as a memorial to Thomas Jefferson. Cameron is asked to contribute 80 dollars, with Hon. 5. M. Burns as Cameron chair. A letter from Theo. Fred Kuper requests local committee support through a few calls, letters, or luncheons.
Cameron council votes to enact paving legislation using general paving law or by ordinance with a two thirds levy on abutting property to fund street improvements. W. W. Chambers urges tax measures while Uvalde Rock Asphalt will be used with two inch layers in business districts and one inch in residential areas.
The Ladies Auxiliary of Walkers Creek Baptist Church invites all to an ice cream supper on Saturday night October 6. Proceeds support church activities and community needs.
In a letter to Cameron official Geo. T. Graves J W Kemp former Cameron resident endorses Uvalde asphalt over inverted penetration praising its durability He suggests thicker pavement for business districts and recommends an eight inch gravel base for residences stating one inch asphalt suits homes if well laid.
J S Doyle of the Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co in San Antonio visited Cameron to promote paving plans. The city will contract Miller Surfacing Co of Houston to lay the work and assess abutting property owners by warrants. Non resident owners blocked the petition, so the city will use the law to enforce assessments.
An ice cream supper is planned Friday night at Marlow Church to raise funds for the local school. Everyone is invited to attend and support the cause.
E A Flinn has been in Colorado for months for health. He returns to the city with Mrs Flinn. Once in frail health for over two years he shows improvement and friends nationwide will be glad.
