City hesitates as talks with Community Public Service Co stall over Cameron water plant sale. Officials warn that without an agreed price, the December bond issue may be useless and the company may demand more than the engineers value. The water firm values its Cameron properties at over 171000, complicating any takeover.
In a column sketching Mr. Landrum and Catholic layman Joseph V. Connally, the author muses on discovery and belief. He contrasts human failure with faith, notes signs of divine grace, and recalls Connally speaking at the National Eucharistic Congress in New Orleans.

Federal government spent 4 073 692 dollars in Milam County from March 4, 1933, to June 30, 1938, averaging about 470 dollars per family. Loans to business, farmers, homeowners and flood relief totaled 1 407 380 dollars, including RCC, rural banks, drought relief and Public Works Administration programs. Outright expenditures and grants reached 2 663 512 dollars, covering Civil Works Administration and old age assistance plus AAA and other relief efforts.
Lions International awards the Rockdale Lions Club a highway welcome sign honoring its activity. The sign will be placed on a main route into the city, with Welcome and meeting dates displayed. A photo of the group at the market site will appear in Lions International.
The Red Cross membership drive is in progress with efforts to contact the public for new memberships and renewals. Citizens may visit the county judge’s office to join or renew if not contacted by the sponsors.
Rockdale is declared winner of district 28 B football after Belton and Hearne disqualifications for ineligible players. J. W. Biles from Nolanville failed grades before transferring to Belton, triggering Belton’s invalidation. Rockdale defeats Rosebud to claim district honors and will face Taylor in the replay for the district title.
Milam county grand jury completed a three day session examining 43 witnesses and returning 11 felony indictments and 1 more serious true bill. Named defendants include Ricardo Fuentes for marijuana possession Zanie Martin with two burglary counts Lorie Lee alias Lorie Lane for forgery and passing forged instruments Katie James for burning personal property Dallas Bush for bigamy and J T Marrs for arson.
Hilton Howell son of Cameron residents was elected president of Hillcrest Memorial Hospital in Waco at the board's annual meeting. A lawyer by training and prominent local attorney, he succeeds C A Nabors as president with Harry Lee Spencer as vice president. L R Keese remains secretary and J R Nash remains treasurer.
A farmers meeting will be held at Ad Hall school building Wednesday night at 7 30 to discuss the December 10 election on whether government control of cotton production should continue for another year. The Ad Hall notice was omitted in error from the published dates list.
Ford officials L. G. Russell and L. W. Cain visited Cameron to showcase the Ford V8 for 1939. A large crowd expressed approval as the debut attracted strong public commendation, with H. I. Stedman, local Ford dealer, noting the V8 surpasses recent Ford models.
Mrs Rush A Thomas will travel to Austin to spend Thanksgiving with her daughter Miss Viola Thomas a State student and they expect to attend the football game that afternoon.
Beginning next week the Herald will mail copies to every Milam county school. Teachers are asked to have small children write letters to Santa Claus for publication in the annual Christmas edition, to be mailed December 22, 1958. Non attending children may also send letters. The publishers.
Congressman Ed Gossett of Wichita Falls spent the weekend in Cameron as a guest of M. G Cox. He was nominated in the recent primary over veteran McFarland and will take his seat in January. Joyce C. Cox, Chicago Santa Fe general attorney, visited his father and Gossett.
Lovie Lee alias Lovie Lane pleaded guilty to forgery and passing forged instruments in district court and was sentenced to six years in the state penitentiary. George A. Scott also pleaded guilty to forgery and passing forged instruments and got seven years. Shedwick McDaniel received a four year suspended sentence for theft of two pigs. Roy Edwards pleaded guilty to theft of four chickens and served thirty days in county jail. Zanie Martin charged with burglary drew a five year sentence.
Joe Klement of Cameron on Rural Route 1 has developed a distinct corn variety from ten years of planting June corn and mixing it with other seeds. He brought six ears to the Herald office showing blue, blue and white, blue and strawberry, deep red, mixed yellow and strawberry, and light red with strawberry grains. He says the corn is a drought resistant, good feed value crop that thrives with little rain and plans further experiments.
Miss Alva Thompson of Temple visited friends in Cameron Sunday, sharing time with longtime acquaintances and calling on local contacts during a brief social trip.
Historians and researchers discuss 18 months of research to support the 20th Century Fox film Suez. The project gathered 200 sketches and portraits, studied 2,500 old books, and sent for data from London Paris and Alexandria to recreate Ferdinand de Lesseps and the canal era.
