Cameron Theatre will close ballots Saturday December 10 for a 150 dollar athletic scholarship award to the outstanding Yeomen football player of 1938. Stanley Swift says counting will take several days after the final vote, with public interest high and thousands of ballots already cast.
The Cameron Herald urges voters to defeat a proposed 180000 bond issue to buy the Community Public Service water works. It argues no sale price is offered, the utilities are not for sale, and the plan would overpay with high broker and engineering fees plus costly litigation.
The State Highway Commission approved a 1940 start for a project to improve State Highway 71 to Milano, including work on the grade crossing at Milano.
The superintendent notes that Stone Garner of the eleventh grade was omitted from the honor roll for the first six weeks. Stone is a consistent honor roll member and never fails, according to E A Perrin.
Citizens rally over the planned demolition of the old town clock on the court house and the dismantling of a justice statue. The court house roof will be replaced, ending a landmark that has tolled hours for decades, with costs reported at $15,000 for the clock installation.
Chares F Rutledge field scout executive of Temple visited Cameron on Tuesday to arrange a Parents Cub meeting for December 13. Cameron Lions Club sponsors a Cub Scout group with Guy Haynes as Cub Master. A Mexican scout troop was organized in Cameron with fourteen boys registering as charter members, with Rutledge as a guest.
The Knights of Pythias Lodge held its 48th annual roll call on Monday November 26 with members answering in person or by letter. Officers nominated for the coming term include J W Haygood Chan cellor Commander R P Williams Vice Chancellor W G Gillis Prelate Lester Glass Master of Works J M McLean Keeper of Records and Seal Master of Finance L A Dusek Master of Exechecker Grady Alles Master of Arms Barton Brown Inner Guard Abner Ingram Jr Cutter Guard. The rank of Page was conferred on Grady Littl at this meeting. At the December 5 meeting two candidates will be advanced to Esquire. Rev J P Love was named chairman of the Christmas Cheer committee.
The Sharp High School project awarded to J. R. Blackmore of Austin began Monday. Volmer Electrical of San Antonio handles all electrical work. The federal allotment is 35325 dollars toward a total cost of about 60000 dollars.
Archie Sheffield received a five year suspended sentence after being convicted in district court this week for assault with intent to murder. The case stems from a domino hall attack on Albert Small that occurred several months prior.
Archie and Tom Peel of Port Sullivan and Bryant Peel of Houston went to Cameron on Monday to probate the will of the late Mrs. James A. Peel.
Architects McClellan Brown and McClellan of Waco win the contract to remodel the Cameron courthouse. J B Johnson designs the plans. The project includes a concrete roof plastered ceilings new electrical work terrazzo floors and interior remodeling funded by a government grant of 11659 with total county cost 13160 to be paid in under 18 years from savings in repairs and insurance premiums. The county expects long term tax relief from reduced maintenance.
Mrs. W. H. Pruett 86 died Monday afternoon November 28 at the Cameron home of her daughter Mrs. I N West after an extended illness. Born in Lavaca County in October 1452 she moved to Milam County seventy years ago and spent most of her life there with her husband. They lived in the Nerviva community before moving to Cameron where he died four years ago at 91. She had lived in this city for 15 years.

Census report by Ray O Neill shows 33 041 bales ginned before November 14 for 1938, versus 42 146 bales by same date last year, a drop of 9 105 bales.
The court house lawn will feature a decorated Christmas tree placed at the north west corner by December 10. W F Gohmert chairs the planning committee and a meeting is set tonight to finalize the program. Local civic groups cooperate to present the tree and a program for citizens and children with about 2000 bags of candy and fruit planned for distribution.
Rev. Vernon G. Miles and a church group attended the State BTU Convention in Wichita Falls over Thanksgiving. The event drew about 11 000 attendees with 2 000 to 9 000 registered. Noted speakers included Dr. RG Lee Memphis Dr R C Campbell Dallas Dr T L Holcombe Nashville J Howard Williams Amarillo and W R White Oklahoma City. The BTU Convention was one of the souths largest, with next year planned for Austin.
John Meeks charged with the murder of Charlie Kirk two years ago will go on trial in district court here on Monday morning December 12 1938. A jury of one hundred men will be drawn and witnesses are expected to attend without resubmission by the sheriff. The court sits in the Knights of Columbus Hall above the American Railway Express office during courthouse renovations.
