Turkey Crop Rapidly Processed for One Million Dollar Value

Workers secured labor as the turkey crop moved to market at 29 to 31 cents per pound for prime fowls. Up to 30 car loads are expected locally with several cars shipped to other plants. Each car carries 26 000 pounds and grosses about 8600 dollars, totaling around 100 cars statewide with value near one million dollars plus processing labor.

Mastodon Tooth Found by Waco Angler in Milam County

Waco fisherman O. W. Majors found a grey brown jaw section with three teeth in the Brazos near Blackbridge Milam County. J B White of Cameron Herald says the teeth are one to two million years old from a flesh eating mastodon. Baylor’s Dr Hawkins advised sending it to Austin for study.

Weems Tale: Texas Grid Star in Far East Air Forces

Staff Sergeant Thomas A. Weems of Rockdale, former Rice Institute star, serves as supply clerk in the 201st Statistical Control Unit of General Kenny's Far East Air Forces in Manila. He starred at Rice and Rockdale High, captaining three sports, and now leads the FEAF Comets basketball squad after joining the Eastern All Star Grid Club in 1942. His wife Eleanor resides in Rockdale and his parents in Cameron. A month is that long interval between pay days.

Right of Way Survey Under Way for New Road to Yarrellton

Charles Nabors reports the right of way survey for a new farm to market road from Yarrellton to Highway 77 is in progress. The project, funded by the State Highway Department, will provide a mail route and all weather access for a wide area, with construction planned after the new year.

Commission suit dismissed in Milam county court

In Milam county district court Judge John Watson ruled against S. W. Sibley in a $95,000 commission suit against H. H. Coffield. The case involved a claimed sale of one half interest in the Kirby office building in Dallas to Oxsheer Smith of Cameron. Coffield’s payoff was $700,000 cash with a $1,000,000 lien assumed. Sibley lacked securities or real estate licenses in Texas.

Letters to Santa Claus Wanted By The Cameron Herald

The Cameron Herald invites Santa letters for its Christmas edition on December 20. Children are urged to write and mail letters, with schools across the county encouraged to participate. Teachers have in past years set aside time for writing, and hundreds of letters are published each year. Jeff Wiggins of Marlin visited Cameron on Wednesday.

Hoyte Home Demonstration Club Meeting Highlights

The Hoyte club gathered November 14 at Mrs. J. H. Angell’s Cameron home for an all day session with Miss Johnson and four members. Members shared a covered dish luncheon and learned refinishing and reupholstering furniture, plus making hat and shoe racks. Plans were set for a Christmas party December 14 at Mrs. Virgil Coward’s home.

SGT Earl Peck Saw the War with Patton

Earl I. Peck Jr. recently discharged from the Third U S Army visits Cameron. He served from March 29 1942 to October 1945, with General Patton in a unit handling signal intelligence. W. K Kuzel commissioner for Precinct 1 Milam County announced Saturday a new Caterpillar grader was purchased for 6570 dollars. Bids opened Thursday and R B George Equipment Company earned the contract as the lowest bidder. The grader will be delivered by March 1, 1946 and will help maintain roads more efficiently.

Land Owners Urge Dam On Watershed

Four hundred land owners from Milam and Bell counties gathered in Belt to press for a flood control dam on the Little and Leon Rivers. Leaders cited widespread overflow, ruin of thousands of acres, and repeated floods since 1900 with losses mounting annually. they argued the dam’s benefits would far exceed costs.

Knitted Garments Donated to Veterans by Red Cross

The Red Cross knitting section led by Mrs. F. C. Fahrendorf has crafted 166 wool items for wounded veterans in the hospital. Simmons Returns Home From Navy Discharge

M W Simmons of 302 West 10th Street Cameron received an honorable discharge at Camp Wallace under the Navy point-release system. He served as Seaman first class USNR after enlisting in June 1943 and was stationed at Pearl Harbor before release. his wife still resides in Cameron. Mrs Hilliard of Milanos shopped in Cameron this week.
