Milam County evaluates its voice in the Milam Bell McLennan Burleson district as Murray Watson from McLennan announces for state senate to replace Jarrard Secrest who seeks lieutenant governor. The piece urges rural counties to influence candidate agendas for the 1960s, focusing on agriculture, industry and local interests.
The Cameron Public Library moved to 112 E First St this week. Hours are Tue Fri 230 pm 530 pm Sat 830 1130 am and 200 pm 530 pm. The brick site houses 3000 volumes in four rooms with fiction reference children's and storage. Officials plan extra shelving and tables as new volumes arrive.
Rep. Murray Watson of McLennan County announces bid for state senate in the Milam Bell McLennan district. He traveled to Cameron to meet constituents and aims to replace Sen. Jarrard Secrest who seeks lieutenant governor. Watson, a conservative on taxes, has advocated funding for state projects and is a Mart and Baylor alum practicing law in Mart and Waco.
The senior high council of the First Presbyterian Church met on May night to plan forthcoming programs and projects. Members present were Frances Jackson, Linda Miller, Nelda Par, Kathy Schofield, Josey Jack and Jimmy Woodum.
Milam lodge No. 125 Knights of Pythians will meet at 6 30 and 7 30 p m Monday November 20 at the Pythian Hall Odd Fellows Building The drive for the Thanksgiving and Christmas Fund for the Pythian Home Weatherford Texas will kick off The home cares for about eighty children and elderly people The meeting is closed for lodge members only A prominent local mystery speaker will give the main address Refreshments will be served.
About 20 downtown Cameron merchants urged the Chamber of Commerce Board to permanently remove meters after hearing Mayor Coleman Duncum discuss revenue cuts and city services. The group favored no meters citing rural shoppers and trade shifts to towns without meters.
The St Anthony Parent-Teachers Club met at Simon-George Hall to plan the Thanksgiving Carnival and heard Ed Schiller discuss narcotics effects on addicts. He cited heroin costs and noted Texas has 1,600 known addicts. Attendance prizes and free baby-sitting were offered to encourage participation.
The Fleur-de-lis Garden Club met at Mrs. Louis Holley home with Mrs. Monroe Fuchs presiding. Members discussed Year-Round Planting and soil prep. Mrs. James Wiggs was named nominating chair with Alton Fuchs and Louis Holley as members. Co-hostesses served dessert, pate, coffee and tea.
Gov. Herbert Schroeder addressed the Cameron Lions Club and installed five new members Byron Wise Don Humble Porter Young Charles Elmore and Cornelius Titsworth He noted Cameron Lions is the second oldest club in his district founded in 1923 with charter members Oxsheer Smith and J C Martin still active

Chamber manager Jack Dubois said Boy Scout and 4-H groups have signed up for the December 1 Santa parade in downtown Cameron. Scouts join civic groups churches and schools in the annual Christmas parade with Santa making his 1961 Milam County debut and a host of floats and units. About 7,500 people attended last year and a similar crowd is expected. Santa will meet Milam County children at the Courthouse after the parade. Cash prizes await the best floats judged on beauty originality workmanship and theme. Candy gifts will be given to children visiting Santa.
Milam County earns three stars in East Texas Chamber rating, including debt near zero and a cash balance at year end 1960. Report notes Milam is virtually debt free with debt of 10 925 as of December 31 1960 and per capita debt well below state area averages.
A second fatal crash at the US 190 curve 2.5 miles west of Branchville injures five people, four from Cameron. Among the dead are two Texas A&M students killed Sunday night in the same curve, raising Milam County 1961 traffic fatalities to seven.
Yee Campus hosts its annual all school carnival on December 4 under YHS Principal Jer ald Underwood. Plans for class performances and activities were not yet finalized.
