Cameron Public Library Opens in New Downtown Location

The Cameron Public Library moved to 112 E First St this week. Hours are Tue Fri 230 pm 530 pm Sat 830 1130 am and 200 pm 530 pm. The brick site houses 3000 volumes in four rooms with fiction reference children's and storage. Officials plan extra shelving and tables as new volumes arrive.

Mart Legislator Announces For State Senator Seat

Rep. Murray Watson of McLennan County announces bid for state senate in the Milam Bell McLennan district. He traveled to Cameron to meet constituents and aims to replace Sen. Jarrard Secrest who seeks lieutenant governor. Watson, a conservative on taxes, has advocated funding for state projects and is a Mart and Baylor alum practicing law in Mart and Waco.

Pythians Hold Annual Roll Call Meeting Monday

Cameron merchants vote to remove downtown parking meters

About 20 downtown Cameron merchants urged the Chamber of Commerce Board to permanently remove meters after hearing Mayor Coleman Duncum discuss revenue cuts and city services. The group favored no meters citing rural shoppers and trade shifts to towns without meters.

Club hears Ed Schiller on dope addicts and crime

The St Anthony Parent-Teachers Club met at Simon-George Hall to plan the Thanksgiving Carnival and heard Ed Schiller discuss narcotics effects on addicts. He cited heroin costs and noted Texas has 1,600 known addicts. Attendance prizes and free baby-sitting were offered to encourage participation.

Parade Plans Sign Up For Cameron Santa Parade

Chamber manager Jack Dubois said Boy Scout and 4-H groups have signed up for the December 1 Santa parade in downtown Cameron. Scouts join civic groups churches and schools in the annual Christmas parade with Santa making his 1961 Milam County debut and a host of floats and units. About 7,500 people attended last year and a similar crowd is expected. Santa will meet Milam County children at the Courthouse after the parade. Cash prizes await the best floats judged on beauty originality workmanship and theme. Candy gifts will be given to children visiting Santa.

Milam Debt Free and Milam's Strong Star Ratings Highlight County Fiscal Health

Milam County earns three stars in East Texas Chamber rating, including debt near zero and a cash balance at year end 1960. Report notes Milam is virtually debt free with debt of 10 925 as of December 31 1960 and per capita debt well below state area averages.

Two Die Sunday On Same Curve In Milam County

A second fatal crash at the US 190 curve 2.5 miles west of Branchville injures five people, four from Cameron. Among the dead are two Texas A&M students killed Sunday night in the same curve, raising Milam County 1961 traffic fatalities to seven.
