Cameron Named for Noted Texas Hero
Cameron, Milam county seat and oldest town in the area, was named in 1946 for Capt. Ewing Cameron, a Texas hero from the 1845 Mier expedition. His gallant stand and ultimate death at the hands of Santa Anna’s troops are recounted, with the town's founding in 1846 and later permanent city organization in 1888 noted. The census of 1920 recorded 4,298 residents, and current estimates place about 6,000.
